Chapter 7: The Whispering Campaign

Victor did not wait for the court date to begin his attack. He launched a vicious smear campaign across social media and local news channels.

Within days, viral posts began circulating online, accusing our foundation of financial mismanagement and claiming that the children were being kept in unsafe conditions. News trucks parked outside the gates of Langford Manor, their bright cameras flashing every time a staff member entered or left.

"Is it true the foundation is taking money from illegal donors?" a reporter shouted through the fence as I arrived with Emily one rainy Tuesday morning.

"Is it true you're using homeless children as a publicity stunt?" another yelled.

I kept my head held high, shielding Emily under my coat as we hurried inside. But the damage was being done. Several major donors panicked and withdrew their monthly funding. The foundation’s bank accounts were frozen pending a legal audit triggered by Victor’s lawyers.

To make matters worse, the cruel reality of the outside world caught up with Emily at her new school.

During lunch, a group of older students approached Emily’s table, holding up a trending video on their phones that falsely maligned our family.

"Your mom is a thief!" one boy sneered, pushing Emily’s lunch tray aside. "My dad says your house is going to be taken away and you're going back to being poor!"

The cafeteria fell silent. Emily sat still, her small fingers tightening around her napkin. A few months ago, before everything happened, she might have cried and run away. But adversity had cultivated a quiet strength inside her heart.

She stood up slowly, picked up her fallen apple, and looked the boy directly in the eyes.

"My mommy works every single day to make sure kids who don't have parents have a warm bed," Emily said clearly, her voice echoing softly across the cafeteria. "If your dad is angry, he can come have dinner with us at the Manor. We always have room for one more."

The boy blinked, utterly speechless. He expected tears or anger; instead, he was met with dignity and kindness. By the end of the afternoon, three of Emily's classmates had handed her handmade cards apologizing for the rumors.

That night, as I sat at my desk crying quietly over stack after stack of unpaid bills and legal threats, Emily walked into the room. She didn't say a word. She simply climbed onto my lap, wrapped her arms around my neck, and laid her head on my shoulder.

"We aren't going to lose, Mommy," she whispered softly. "Because good people don't give up."

Her words gave me the courage to keep fighting. But legal battles required evidence, and to stop Victor Vance, I needed to know what really happened between him and Helen years ago.
