Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO RAISED MY CHILDREN

I moved the children behind me.

Mrs. Harper looked almost peaceful.

For seven years, she had prepared their meals.

Read Lily bedtime stories.

Helped Noah with homework.

She had held my children when they were sick.

And all that time, she had been lying.

Caldwell stepped into the chapel.

"Daniel."

I stared at him.

"You touched my children."

He smiled.

"Not directly."

My fists tightened.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You promised."

"I promised you nothing."

My mother rose.

"Enough."

Caldwell laughed.

"You still think you have power."

She looked at him.

"I know exactly what you want."

"The trust."

"No."

He smiled.

"The boy."

My mother shook her head.

"You don't understand."

Caldwell's expression hardened.

"Then explain."

"The trust is already activated."

He froze.

"What?"

She looked at Noah.

"His father triggered it when he opened the east wing."

Caldwell stared at me.

I suddenly understood.

The key hadn't opened a room.

It had triggered a legal mechanism.

Everything my father had hidden was now accessible.

My mother reached into her coat.

"Your father planned for this."

She handed me a document.

I opened it.

The final beneficiary wasn't Noah.

It was the public.

The trust contained evidence of Caldwell's crimes.

If activated, the documents would be released automatically.

Caldwell stepped forward.

"Give me the papers."

"No."

He reached for me.

I moved.

Vanessa grabbed Lily.

Adrian grabbed Noah.

Mrs. Harper shouted.

Everything happened at once.

Caldwell lunged.

I shoved him back.

He stumbled into a pew.

"Run!"

I pushed the children toward the side door.

But Mrs. Harper blocked it.

"No."

I stared at her.

She smiled.

"You should have stayed ignorant."

Then Noah stepped forward.

He was trembling.

But his voice was clear.

"You hurt my sister."

Mrs. Harper laughed.

"You're just a child."

Noah looked at me.

Then he whispered:

"Dad, I remember where the other key is."

My heart stopped.

"What other key?"

Noah pointed toward the chapel altar.

"The one Grandpa told me never to lose."

Caldwell's face changed.

He knew exactly what Noah meant.

He ran toward the altar.

I followed.

But before I could reach him, Caldwell grabbed the key.

And smiled.
