Chapter 14 - THE LAST WOMAN STANDING

Darkness swallowed the room.
I grabbed the files.
"Where's the exit?"
My father pointed toward the wall.
"Behind the cabinet."
I pushed it aside.
A narrow passage opened.
"Come on."
My father struggled to stand.
I helped him.
Mrs. Harper followed.
We moved through the tunnel.
Behind us, Caldwell shouted.
"Daniel!"
We kept going.
The tunnel opened behind the mansion's wine cellar.
Vanessa and the children were waiting there with Adrian.
The moment Noah saw me, he ran into my arms.
"Dad!"
I held him tightly.
"I'm here."
Lily followed.
"Where were you?"
"I was finding the truth."
She hugged my leg.
Caldwell appeared at the end of the tunnel.
He stopped when he saw my father.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed his face.
"You."
My father stepped forward.
"Yes."
Caldwell shook his head.
"You should be dead."
"I was."
"What did you do with the trust?"
My father smiled.
"I gave it to my son."
Caldwell looked at me.
"No."
I held the documents.
"It's over."
Caldwell lunged.
Adrian tackled him.
The struggle lasted only seconds.
Security officers rushed into the cellar.
My attorney had arrived with the police.
Caldwell was restrained.
Mrs. Harper surrendered.
The mansion filled with people.
Investigators.
Lawyers.
Officers.
Everyone who had spent years hiding the truth was finally forced to face it.
Vanessa stood beside me.
"I know you don't want me near you."
I looked at her.
"I don't know what I want."
"I understand."
She looked at Noah.
"Can I tell him?"
I nodded.
She approached our son.
"Noah."
He looked at her.
"Are you my mom?"
Vanessa's face broke.
"Yes."
He stared at her.
"Why did you leave?"
"Because I was scared."
"Of what?"
"Of losing you."
Noah looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
"I don't understand."
"I know."
He thought for a moment.
Then he hugged her.
Vanessa collapsed into tears.
I looked away.
Some wounds couldn't be repaired in a single night.
But maybe they could begin healing.
My father was taken to a private hospital.
Before leaving, he called me over.
"There is one more thing."
I almost laughed.
"Of course there is."
He smiled weakly.
"Your mother."
"What about her?"
"She left you a letter."
"Where?"
"At home."
I returned to the east wing.
Behind the old photograph, I found an envelope.
My mother's handwriting.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, then you finally know what I did.
I continued.
I lied because I believed lies were safer than truth. I was wrong.
My eyes filled with tears.
Then I reached the final page.
There is one person I never told you about.
I stopped.
The final line read:
Your father was not the only man who helped me protect you.
Below it was a name.
A name I had never heard before.
And beside it was an address.
I stared at the paper.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice whispered:
"Daniel, if you want to know who your mother really was, come alone."
I looked at Noah.
Then Lily.
Then Vanessa.
I didn't know who to trust anymore.
May you like
But I knew one thing.
The story wasn't finished.
