Chapter 5: Poison in the Well

Chapter 5: Poison in the Well

By noon, the financial world was in a state of absolute chaos. News of the Ashford Trustâs takeover swept through Wall Street like a hurricane. Sterling Resorts stock crashed by sixty-five percent in a single hour of trading, triggering an automatic circuit breaker that suspended all trading on the stock exchange.
In a penthouse suite at a boutique hotel downtownâhaving been locked out of the Azure Crown penthouseâJulian sat slumped in an armchair, surrounded by half-empty whiskey glasses.
Vanessa Blake was pacing frantically across the room, her eyes wild with panic as she stared at her phone.
"My sponsors are dropping me, Julian!" she shrieked, holding out her screen. "Three major luxury brands just canceled their contracts! They're calling me a corporate accomplice! You told me you owned everything! You lied to me!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Julian roared, slamming his glass onto the table. "I am trying to think! We still have the Cayman accounts. We have twelve million dollars in liquid funds."
"No, we don't," Vanessa whimpered, her face turning pale. "I tried to transfer two million to my personal account an hour ago. The bank said the accounts have been frozen under a federal asset preservation order!"
Julian gasped, grabbing his head in his hands. He was completely cornered. The Ashford fortune was an insurmountable wall, crushing him from every direction.
"There has to be a way out," Julian muttered wildly, his eyes darting around the room. "She cares about her reputation. Elena has always been obsessive about her integrity. If we ruin her credibility before the public, the board might hesitate to finalize the lease termination."
Vanessa stopped pacing, a sharp, villainous look returning to her eyes. "How?"
"We leak a story," Julian said, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "We tell the press that Elena was mentally unstable. We claim she was embezzling funds from the resort's foundation to give to her family, and that I was forced to divorce her to protect the company. We use your social media accounts to post fabricated personal emails."
Vanessa smiled sinisterly. "I have a designer who can forge email headers in less than an hour. We can make it look like she was planning to sell the resortâs architectural blueprints to foreign competitors."
Within hours, a coordinated smear campaign exploded across social media and tabloid websites. Fabricated documents appearing to show Elena Ashfordâs signature on illegal foreign wire transactions began circulating. Hashtags accusing Elena of corporate treason began trending globally.
Inside her private office at the Ashford Trust headquarters, Elena sat quietly behind a sleek dark oak desk, watching the news reports unfold on the television monitor.
Grace, the former Corporate Compliance officer who had provided the initial tip, stood beside Noah Montgomery.
"They're playing dirty, Miss Ashford," Grace reported, her hands clasped nervously. "The fake documents are spreading rapidly. Public opinion is beginning to sway."
"Should we issue an immediate legal injunction and press release, Elena?" Noah asked, leaning against the edge of her desk, his expression protective and urgent.
Elena looked up at Noah. She saw the genuine concern in his dark eyesâa stark contrast to Julian's cold narcissism. For nine years, she had been surrounded by men who wanted to use her; Noah was the first person in a long time who stood beside her simply to shield her.
"No, Noah," Elena said gently, a quiet confidence in her eyes. "Let the poison spread a little further. When a snake comes out of the grass to bite, you don't chase it back into the dark. You let it strike so everyone can see where it lives."
"What are you planning?" Noah asked, intrigued by her calm brilliant mind.
"Vanessa Blake is hosting a live charity stream tonight at the Metropolitan Art Center," Elena revealed, pulling up an invitation on her tablet. "She claims she is auctioning off private heirlooms to support women in business. She intends to auction off my grandmotherâs emerald pendant to prove she owns it legally."

Elena stood up, smoothing down her jacket.
"Noah," she smiled, "prepare the federal warrants. Tonight, we attend an auction."
