Chapter 11 - MOM'S LAST SECRET I called Mom.
"Why did you try to withdraw ten thousand dollars?"
"To put money back."
I didn't understand.
She explained that she had taken a personal loan against her car.
She had intended to restore part of what she'd taken.
But instead of telling us, she tried to move the money secretly.
The bank flagged the transaction.
"You don't fix secrecy with more secrecy."
"I know."
"Do you?"
Her voice broke.
"I'm trying."
For the first time, I heard something different in her voice.
Not defensiveness.
Shame.
The attorney reconstructed the money trail.
Thirty-six thousand dollars had been withdrawn.
Twenty-two thousand had gone to Lauren.
Eight thousand had funded a family vacation.
Six thousand had paid Lauren's lawyer.
Mom signed an agreement to repay every dollar.
She surrendered control of the account.
Dad took over the finances.
Then Mom sent me a handwritten letter.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I opened it.
She didn't ask me to forgive her.
She didn't blame Lauren.
She wrote:
I taught your sister that consequences were cruelty, and I taught you that keeping peace was love. I failed both of you. Emma paid for that failure.
I read it twice.
Then I saw the final sentence.
There is something I never told you about your childhood.
I called her.
"Tell me."
Mom began crying.
"When Lauren was twelve..."
She stopped.
