Chapter 12 - THE MEMORY I NEVER HAD I was eight years old.

I didn't remember what happened.
Mom did.
Lauren had been angry because I borrowed a bracelet without asking.
She shoved me at the top of the basement stairs.
I fell six steps.
My chin split against the concrete.
I remembered the scar.
I remembered the hospital.
I remembered being told I had slipped.
I had never known the truth.
"Lauren pushed me?"
"Yes."
"You lied?"
"Yes."
"For twenty years?"
"Yes."
Why?
Because Lauren cried.
Because Lauren begged.
Because Mom believed punishment would "damage" her.
So she protected her.
Then protected her again.
And again.
Every time Lauren crossed a line, Mom lowered the line.
"Why tell me now?"
Mom's voice cracked.
"Because when she hit Emma, I saw those basement stairs again."
I closed my eyes.
"And you still defended her."
"I know."
That was the truth Mom could not escape.
She knew what Lauren was capable of.
She had simply spent years convincing herself that love meant preventing consequences.
I told her I couldn't promise forgiveness.
She didn't ask.
For the first time, Mom accepted a boundary without fighting it.
Two days later, Dad called.
Lauren had disappeared.
She had emptied her apartment.
Her phone went straight to voicemail.
Her social media vanished.
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I felt uneasy.
People who lose control sometimes make one final attempt to get it back.
That night, I opened Emma's diaper bag.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
May you like
Five words.
YOU STOLE MY FAMILY FROM ME.
