CHAPTER 5 : THE BOARDROOM BLITZ

CHAPTER 5 : THE BOARDROOM BLITZ
The rescue operation at the Aegis facility sent shockwaves through the global underworld. Over two hundred innocent test subjects had been safely extracted and handed over to a specialized, uncorrupted task force within the federal government, an alliance brokered by Arthur's journalistic connections.

But the Apex Protocol was a wounded beast, and a wounded beast is infinitely more dangerous.
Deep within the penthouse suite of the city’s tallest skyscraper, Julian Thorne, the brilliant but sociopathic CEO of Aegis Pharmaceuticals, paced furiously across his Persian rug. He was the architect of the serum, the true mastermind who had manipulated Elias from the shadows.
"She took out an entire armed squadron with her bare hands," Thorne hissed, glaring at the security footage playing on his massive wall monitor. "The mutation stabilized within her. She is the perfect specimen, and you let her walk right out the front door!"
"Sir, we are tracking her digital footprint," his chief of security stammered nervously. "We believe the journalist, Arthur Pendelton, is acting as her handler. We have a strike team ready to hit their suspected safehouse within the hour."
Thorne adjusted his tailored suit, his eyes cold and devoid of human empathy. "Do not kill her. I need her alive. Her blood contains the stabilizing enzyme that can perfect the commercial version of the serum. Burn the safehouse to the ground, kill the journalist, and bring the girl to the Zenith Gala tonight."
Far below the city, in the abandoned subway terminal, Valerie felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down her spine. Her enhanced senses picked up a faint, rhythmic vibration echoing through the concrete ceiling. It was the synchronized marching of combat boots.
"Arthur," Valerie said sharply, her crimson eyes scanning the dark tunnels. "We have company."
Arthur slammed his laptop shut, shoving the decrypted hard drives into his heavy canvas backpack. "They bypassed my perimeter alarms? How is that even possible?"
"Because they didn't come through the doors," Valerie noted grimly, looking up at the reinforced ceiling grates. "They are cutting through the street above us."
A blinding flash of thermite blew the heavy steel grate inward, showering the command center in a torrential downpour of sparks and concrete dust. Ropes dropped from the gaping hole, and a dozen elite Apex operatives descended into the terminal.
"Run, Arthur! Get to the extraction vehicle!" Valerie screamed, grabbing a heavy steel pipe from the rubble.
Arthur sprinted toward the service tunnels, but a stray shot from a mercenary's stun-rifle caught him in the shoulder. He collapsed, crying out in pain as the heavy backpack slipped from his grasp.
Seeing her only friend fall ignited a primal, protective fury inside Valerie. She became a force of pure, untethered nature. She vaulted over the server racks, deflecting a barrage of stun darts with a shattered server panel, and crashed into the enemy line like a tidal wave. She didn't fight to kill; she fought with absolute, surgical precision to disarm and incapacitate, protecting the fragile thread of humanity she refused to let Thorne destroy.
She cleared a path to Arthur, pulling him to his feet and throwing his arm over her shoulder. "I've got you. We are not dying in the dark," she promised fiercely.

Together, they limped into the hidden service elevator, the steel doors slamming shut just as the remaining mercenaries flooded the terminal. As they rode up to the surface, Valerie looked at Arthur's pale face, realizing a terrifying truth. She couldn't keep playing defense. She couldn't keep running.
"Where is Thorne tonight?" Valerie demanded, her voice as cold as ice.
May you like
Arthur coughed, clutching his shoulder. "The Zenith Gala. It's a massive global economic summit. He is planning to unveil the commercialized serum to international defense contractors as a highly classified 'super-soldier' supplement."
Valerie’s glowing eyes narrowed, filled with a righteous, unstoppable resolve. "Then it’s time to crash the party."
