Chapter 3 - THE ASHES OF BETRAYALThe explosion rattled the remaining stained-glass windows of the Vance estate, raining a kaleidoscope of colored shards onto the bloody marble. Outside, the twisted, burning wreckage of the black SUV illuminated the rose garden in a hellish, dancing orange glow. Marcus was gone. The threat was neutralized.

Julian didn’t flinch. He didn’t even blink. He merely adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke Tom Ford suit, the fabric impeccable despite the slaughter surrounding him.
Victoria, however, was broken. The haughty socialite who had sneered at servants and plotted the murder of an infant was now a sobbing, hyperventilating mess on the floor. She stared at the flames outside, the reality of her husband’s monstrous intellect finally crushing her hollow arrogance.
"Julian... please," she begged, her voice a wet, pathetic rasp. "I was manipulated. Marcus forced me!"
"Save your breath, Victoria," Julian said, his tone devoid of any human warmth. He gestured to the shadows. Two of his elite cleaners—men who officially did not exist—stepped out from the corridors, their faces obscured by tactical balaclavas. "Take her to the Black Room at the harbor facility. Do not let her sleep. Do not let her speak to anyone. If she tries to harm herself, break her legs."
Victoria’s screams echoed through the grand foyer as she was dragged away by her perfectly manicured hair, her designer gown leaving a trail through the debris.
Julian turned his back on her, pulling out his encrypted comms unit. "Maria. Status."
Static crackled before the cool, steady voice of his Head of Security replied. "Target is secure, Mr. Vance. Leo is asleep. Panic room integrity is at one hundred percent."
Julian exhaled, the first genuine sign of emotion crossing his chiseled features. "Stay put. I'm going out to the wreckage. Marcus was a fool, but he was a paranoid fool. He wouldn’t have blown up without an insurance policy."

Stepping into the crisp night air, the scent of burning rubber and scorched flesh filled Julian’s lungs. He approached the flaming husk of the SUV. The heat was unbearable, but Julian ignored it. His eyes locked onto a small, fire-resistant titanium lockbox that had been thrown from the vehicle's cabin in the blast.
He knelt, prying it open with the butt of his sidearm. Inside lay a single, scorched hard drive. Julian pocketed it, a dangerous smile touching his lips. The war wasn't over. It was just beginning.
