Chapter 10 - The Safe Haven's CalmWhile the Vance empire was being systematically dismantled piece by piece in Manhattan, the atmosphere inside the modest Queens townhouse could not have been more peaceful.

Sunlight filtered through the lace curtains of the living room, casting warm, dancing patterns across the vintage rug. Lily was sitting cross-legged on the floor, deeply engrossed in coloring a picture of a magical castle, humming a cheerful little tune to herself. The trauma of the grand ballroom seemed to have washed away, replaced by the comforting security of knowing she was safe, protected, and deeply loved.

Evelyn stood in the small, retro kitchen, stirring a pot of homemade chicken soup. The rich, savory aroma filled the cozy house, driving away the last lingering ghosts of the cold, sterile luxury penthouse they had left behind.

Her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was Marcus calling through the encrypted VoIP channel. Evelyn wiped her hands on a floral dish towel and picked up the phone.

"Marcus. Give me the update," Evelyn said calmly, leaning against the counter.

"It's done," Marcus's voice came through, bubbling with unmistakable triumph. "The board of directors held an emergency vote an hour ago. Julian was unanimously stripped of his CEO title and placed on indefinite administrative leave. He has zero access to corporate funds, his personal accounts are frozen by federal regulators, and his high-priced legal team just formally resigned because their retainers bounced."

Evelyn closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, slow breath she felt like she had been holding for seven years. The iron weight pressing down on her chest finally evaporated.

"And the custody papers?" Evelyn asked, her voice steady.

"Served, filed, and already moving through family court," Marcus replied. "Given the federal indictments against him, the viral video of his abusive tirade, and his complete financial collapse, Judge Harrison expedited the emergency temporary sole custody order. You have full legal and physical custody of Lily effective immediately. Julian isn't even allowed within five hundred feet of either of you."

"Thank you, Marcus," Evelyn said softly, a genuine smile touching her lips. "You have no idea what this means to me."

"Don't thank me yet, Evelyn. You engineered this entire masterpiece. I just hit the send button," Marcus chuckled on the other end. "By the way, there's a reporter from The Wall Street Journal who has been digging into your background, trying to find out who orchestrated the data leak. They haven't linked it to you yet—they think it was an internal whistleblower—but we need to maintain absolute radio silence."

"Understood. I'm staying right here off the grid," Evelyn replied. "Let me know if Julian tries anything desperate."

"Will do. Take care of Lily." The line went dead.

Evelyn set the phone down and walked back out into the living room, watching her daughter happily humming over her crayons. She felt a profound sense of liberation wash over her. The cage was broken. The monster had been dethroned. And for the first time in her adult life, Evelyn and her daughter were truly, irrevocably free.
