Chapter 6 - The Morning After the StormThe morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, sharp shadows across the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Vance penthouse on Park Avenue. But inside, the opulent residence felt less like a luxury home and more like a crime scene.

Julian Vance stood in the center of his expansive, minimalist living room, his white tuxedo jacket discarded on the floor, his black bowtie undone and hanging loosely around his neck like a noose. His usually immaculate hair was disheveled, strands falling across his forehead. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles bruising the skin beneath them from a night devoid of sleep.
In front of him stood his chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, a sharp-faced man in his sixties wearing a bespoke charcoal suit that suddenly looked entirely too tight. Pendelton was staring down at his tablet computer, his hands trembling slightly as he scrolled through glowing red financial charts and breaking news alerts.
"Explain this to me again, Arthur, without using corporate jargon," Julian growled, his voice a hoarse, menacing rasp. "How in God's name is Vance Corp stock down twelve percent before the opening bell? Explain to me why our primary operational accounts in Zurich have been frozen by Swiss banking authorities overnight!"
Pendelton swallowed hard, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. "Mr. Vance... it’s... it’s catastrophic. We’re facing an unprecedented leak. Someone with deep, highly privileged access to our internal ledgers has transmitted a massive trove of financial documents to federal regulators and investigative journalists."
Julian’s face went completely pale, followed instantly by a surge of furious crimson. "Who?! Who has that kind of access? Only you, me, and the CFO know the full structure of those accounts!"
"It’s not just internal embezzlement allegations, sir," Pendelton said, his voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "The SEC... they're launching a formal fraud investigation. Federal marshals are already en route to our midtown corporate headquarters with a warrant to seize physical and digital records. And... and that's not all."
Julian snatched the tablet right out of the lawyer's hands, his eyes scanning the headlines flashing across financial news networks:
BREAKING: VANCE CORP FACES FEDERAL FRAUD PROBE AMID MASSIVE FINANCIAL LEAKS. SCANDAL AT THE GALA: BILLIONAIRE JULIAN VANCE CAUGHT ON CAMERA IN PUBLIC TIRADE AGAINST SEVEN-YEAR-OLD CHILD.
Beneath the second headline was a crystal-clear, high-resolution photograph taken by the freelance blogger the night before. It captured Julian in all his ugly, unhinged glory—towering menacingly over weeping little Lily, his face distorted in rage, while Evelyn stood defiantly in her crimson gown protecting her child.
The image was plastered across every major news outlet, social media platform, and morning talk show. The internet had already dubbed him "The Monster Billionaire of Park Avenue." Netizens were flooding Vance Corp's social media pages with outrage, calling for boycotts, investigations, and his immediate resignation from every board of directors he sat on.
Julian stared at the screen, his mind screeching to a halt. The tablet slipped from his fingers, crashing against the hardwood floor and shattering into a spiderweb of broken glass.
"Evelyn," Julian whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "That ungrateful, conniving bitch."
"Sir?" Pendelton asked cautiously. "Where is Mrs. Vance? And your daughter? My investigators checked all the usual locations—country clubs, luxury hotels, the Hamptons estate. They haven't used any of their credit cards since leaving the gala last night."

Julian didn't answer. A cold realization washed over him, dousing his fury with a terrifying spike of adrenaline. Evelyn wasn't just a quiet, submissive housewife who would cower in a corner and wait for him to forgive her. She had planned this. Every quiet look, every compliant nod over the past three years—it had all been a buildup to this exact moment. She had systematically gathered the evidence, waited for the optimal moment of maximum public exposure, and pulled the pin on the grenade.
"Find them," Julian snarled, turning on his heel to face his personal security chief, Viktor, who was standing silently by the doorway like a grim reaper. "Find Evelyn and my daughter, and bring them back to me by the end of the day. Whatever it takes."
