Chapter 2 : The Secret in the Silver

The grand ballroom, once buzzing with the superficial chatter of Manhattan’s elite, had been cleared in record time. Outside the towering glass windows, the flashing red and blue lights of private security vehicles painted the rainy street as Victoria—Marcus’s now-ex-wife—was physically escorted off the premises, screaming obscenities into the night.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse suite, the atmosphere was entirely different. Marcus knelt on the plush Persian rug, completely ignoring the creases forming in his bespoke tuxedo. In front of him sat little Chloe, wrapped in a warm, oversized cashmere blanket. A private chef had quickly prepared a bowl of hot chicken soup, and the little girl was eating it with a desperate hunger that shattered Marcus’s heart into a million pieces.

"Take your time, sweetheart," Marcus said softly, handing her a glass of warm milk. "Nobody is ever going to take your food away again. I promise you that."

Chloe looked up, her large, soulful brown eyes reflecting the soft glow of the fireplace. She possessed the exact same eyes as Elena, Marcus’s older sister. A wave of profound grief washed over him. Elena had been disowned by their strict father years ago for refusing a arranged corporate marriage, choosing instead to live a quiet life. When she died in a tragic house fire three years ago, Marcus was told she had left no survivors. He had been lied to.

"Uncle Marcus?" Chloe’s tiny voice trembled as she set the spoon down. She reached into the pocket of her ragged, oversized coat and pulled out the silver Sterling crest. "Mommy told me to find you. She said... she said if the bad men ever came back, I had to bring this to you."

Marcus frowned, his protective instincts flaring into a raging inferno. "Bad men? Chloe, what bad men?"

Chloe’s lower lip quivered. "The men in the black cars. The ones who worked for the lady in the yellow dress. They used to come to our apartment and yell at Mommy. They told her if she ever tried to talk to you, they would hurt me. When the fire happened... Mommy hid me in the basement. She gave me the crest and told me to run."

The air in the room grew ice-cold. Marcus stared at the silver crest in Chloe’s trembling hand, a terrifying realization clicking into place. He gently took the heirloom and pressed his thumb against the lion’s engraved eye—a hidden latch only a true Sterling would know about. The crest popped open with a soft click, revealing a tiny, waterproof micro-SD card nestled inside.

Victoria hadn't just hated his sister. She and her corrupt, billionaire family, the Blackwoods, had orchestrated Elena’s ruin to ensure there were no other heirs to the Sterling fortune. They had murdered his sister.

Marcus clenched his jaw so tightly his teeth ground together. He looked at his innocent niece, who had survived three years in the foster system, hiding from monsters in tailored suits. The sadness in Marcus’s eyes instantly vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating gaze of an apex predator.

"Chloe," Marcus said gently, smoothing her messy hair. "You rest now. You are safe. But Uncle Marcus has some work to do. I have a dragon to slay."
