Chapter 3 : The Gathering Storm

The sterile, harsh fluorescent lights of the private hospital wing buzzed quietly overhead, casting long, sharp shadows against the polished linoleum floor. Daniel paced the length of the corridor, his custom-tailored suit feeling like a suffocating suit of armor. Every time he closed his eyes, the image of Maya’s blood staining the pristine white marble of his kitchen flashed behind his eyelids. The guilt was a heavy, suffocating weight on his chest. He had been so blind, so consumed by the endless demands of his corporate empire, that he had failed to see the monster sleeping in his own bed.

The heavy wooden door to Maya’s recovery room finally clicked open, and Dr. Aris, a renowned trauma specialist Daniel had immediately retained, stepped out. His expression was grave but reassuring.

"Mr. Sterling," Dr. Aris began, lowering his clipboard. "Maya is stable. We’ve closed the laceration on her forehead with fine sutures to minimize scarring. However, the physical trauma is extensive. She has defensive bruising along her forearms, cracked ribs, and severe malnourishment. The psychological trauma, I fear, runs much deeper. She needs absolute peace, security, and intensive therapy."

Daniel’s jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached. "She will have everything she needs. Blank check, Dr. Aris. The absolute best care, round-the-clock security, and complete privacy. No one—especially not the Vance family or the press—gets near this floor."

"Understood," the doctor nodded. "She is awake now. She’s asking for you."

Daniel took a deep, steadying breath and pushed open the door. The suite was expansive and warm, filled with soft lighting and gentle instrumental music, a stark contrast to the cold terror of the morning. Maya looked terrifyingly small in the center of the large hospital bed. Her forehead was wrapped in thick white gauze, and her dark eyes darted nervously around the room, expecting a trap. When her gaze landed on Daniel, her tense shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.

"Mr. Daniel," she whispered, her voice hoarse and trembling.

"Just Daniel, Maya," he said softly, pulling a chair to her bedside. He deliberately kept his distance, ensuring he didn't crowd her fragile space. "You don't have to call me 'Sir' or 'Mr.' ever again. You are not my employee anymore. As of this morning, you are under my personal protection."

Tears welled in Maya’s eyes, tracing slow paths down her bruised cheeks. "She told me... she told me that if I ever spoke a word, she would have me deported. She said you would always side with your wife, that a billionaire would never care about a maid."

"Vanessa lied," Daniel stated, his voice a low, unwavering vow of absolute loyalty. "She is currently sitting in a holding cell, and my legal team is filing the divorce papers as we speak. I am liquidating her access to all joint accounts. She will never be able to use my wealth to hurt another human being again. I failed to protect you in that house, Maya, but I swear on my life, I will not fail you again."

Maya looked at him, searching his face for any sign of deceit. But all she saw was profound remorse and a terrifying, protective resolve. For the first time in months, the crushing weight of fear began to lift from her chest.

Meanwhile, across the city, the Vance family estate was in a state of absolute, chaotic panic. Arthur Vance, Vanessa’s father and a ruthless real estate tycoon, smashed a crystal decanter against his office wall. The local news was already running blind items about a domestic incident at the Sterling mansion.

"Get my daughter out on bail immediately!" Arthur roared at his trembling legal team. "I don't care who you have to bribe or what judge you have to threaten! And find out where Daniel is hiding that lying, opportunistic maid. We need to silence her before this destroys our stock prices!"

The war had officially begun. But Arthur Vance had wildly underestimated the wrath of a man who had finally woken up to the truth.
