Chapter 4 : Venom and Lies

Chapter 4 : Venom and Lies

Two weeks had passed since the incident. Maya had been moved from the hospital to a secluded, heavily guarded secondary estate Daniel owned on the coast. The ocean breeze and the endless horizon provided a therapeutic sanctuary. Daniel visited every evening, bringing books, her favorite foods, and an unwavering, respectful presence that slowly helped her rebuild her shattered trust in humanity.
However, the outside world was burning.
Vanessa had been released on a staggering five-million-dollar bail. True to her venomous nature, she did not retreat in shame. Instead, guided by her father’s aggressive PR machine, she went on the offensive.
Daniel sat in the living room of the coastal estate, the TV muted as a prominent gossip channel flashed images of Vanessa. She was wearing a modest, pale pink dress, crying entirely fake, theatrical tears during an exclusive daytime television interview. The headline crawling across the bottom of the screen read: Billionaire's Wife Claims Self-Defense Against Deranged Employee.
"Turn it off," Maya said quietly, standing in the doorway of the living room. She wore comfortable, oversized cashmere, her physical wounds healing, though the emotional scars remained tender.
Daniel instantly clicked the remote, the screen plunging into black. He stood up, guilt washing over him. "I'm sorry, Maya. I should have made sure the television was disconnected. I didn't want you to see her lies."
"It's okay, Daniel," Maya replied, taking a tentative step into the room. Her voice was growing stronger with each passing day. "I need to know what she is saying. What is her story?"
Daniel sighed, rubbing his temples. "She is claiming that you were attempting to extort us. She says you attacked her with the wooden spoon, and she merely pushed you away in self-defense. Her father has hired private investigators to dig into your past. They found your estranged uncle—the one who stole your college fund—and paid him to give statements to the press calling you a manipulative liar."
Maya closed her eyes, a shiver running down her spine. The Vance family’s reach was suffocating. They were trying to rewrite reality, using their billions to crush her truth. "Will the police believe them? She has so much power, Daniel."
"They have PR, Maya. We have the truth," Daniel said, walking toward her but stopping a respectful distance away. He pulled out his phone. "They don't know about the flash drive. The police kept the footage sealed as ongoing evidence, and I instructed the DA to let Vanessa weave her web of lies publicly."
Maya looked up, confused. "Why? Why let her lie to the world?"
A dark, calculating smile touched Daniel's lips—a boardroom predator preparing for a hostile takeover. "Because, Maya, perjury is a felony. Defamation is a civil crime. Every time she goes on national television and lies about you, she is digging her own grave deeper. When we drop the footage in the courtroom, she won't just be a domestic abuser; she will be a documented, pathological liar exposed before the entire world. Her father's empire will crumble with her."
Maya looked at Daniel, realizing the sheer, terrifying intellect of the man defending her. He wasn't just reacting; he was orchestrating a masterclass in total destruction.

"But tomorrow is the board meeting," Maya noted, her brow furrowing with concern. "I heard your security detail talking. Arthur Vance sits on your board of directors. He is going to try to remove you as CEO, isn't he?"
"He will certainly try," Daniel said, adjusting his cuffs with chilling calmness. "But Arthur Vance is about to learn that you do not corner a wolf and expect to walk away without getting bitten. Get some rest, Maya. Tomorrow, we take the offensive."
