Chapter 4: Echoes of the Past: The Forgotten Sister

The gray stone facade of St. Dymphna’s Private Psychiatric Facility loomed ominously beneath the overcast morning sky. Located in a secluded valley two hours north of the city, the institution was heavily funded by anonymous charitable endowments—endowments that Julian now knew came directly from the embezzled accounts of the Vance family trust fund.

Julian clutched a thick manila folder beneath his arm as he walked up the wide stone steps of the administration building. Inside the folder were court-ordered visitation mandates and the deeply classified medical logs he had uncovered from Eleanor’s private safe.

He was greeted at the heavy security doors by Dr. Harrison, a tired-looking administrator whose graying temples spoke of decades spent managing society's most inconvenient secrets.

"Mr. Vance, I presume," Dr. Harrison said, his tone devoid of warmth as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses. "When we received the judge's emergency writ, we were... surprised. For twenty years, Madame Eleanor was our sole point of contact regarding Patient 404."

"Patient 404," Julian repeated bitterly, his jaw tightening. "Her name is Jane Vance. She is my older sister. And she was never insane, Doctor. She was simply inconvenient to a tyrant."

Dr. Harrison remained silent, gesturing down a long, linoleum-lined corridor illuminated by flickering fluorescent lights. "The medical board will conduct a full review of her initial admission records, of course. But I must warn you, Mr. Vance: twenty years of isolation in a restricted ward changes a person. She may not remember you the way you remember her."

They stopped in front of room 214, a heavy metal door with a small, reinforced glass window. Julian felt his heart hammer against his ribs. The ghosts of his childhood—memories of a bright, laughing sister who suddenly vanished overnight with a fabricated story of a tragic accident—flashed through his mind.

Dr. Harrison unlocked the door with a heavy brass key and pushed it open. "Take all the time you need."

The room was sparse, furnished only with a narrow metal bed, a wooden nightstand, and a single window overlooking a high brick wall. Sitting on the edge of the mattress was a woman whose silver-streaked hair fell loosely around her shoulders. She wore a simple gray cardigan, her hands folded quietly in her lap as she stared blankly at the floor.

"Jane?" Julian choked out, the word catching in his throat.

The woman slowly raised her head. Her eyes—the same striking, piercing blue as Lily’s—narrowed as she tried to focus on the intruder standing in her doorway. For a long moment, silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.

Then, a flicker of recognition sparked in Jane's eyes. Her lips parted in shock, and she stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"Julian?" she whispered, her voice raspy from decades of disuse. "Is... is that really you? Or am I finally losing my mind completely?"

Julian dropped the folder, crossed the room in two rapid strides, and pulled his sister into a fierce, suffocating embrace. Jane let out a ragged gasp, her arms trembling as they wrapped around his back. Twenty years of stolen time, unshed tears, and profound loneliness poured out of her in a broken, heartbreaking sob that shook her entire frame.

"It's me, Jane. I'm so sorry it took me so long to find you," Julian murmured into her hair, tears finally spilling over his own eyelashes. "You're free now. The nightmare is over. Mother has been arrested, and you are coming home with me."

Jane pulled back slightly, her hands trembling as she touched Julian's face, tracing his features to verify he wasn't a phantom of her imagination. "Mother... arrested? After all this time? She told me everyone forgot about me. She said if I ever questioned her authority over the estate, I would rot in this room forever."

"She lied to keep her empire built on lies," Julian said, his voice hard as steel. "We are going to take back everything she stole from us, Jane. And you are going to see the sun rise outside these walls for the first time in two decades."

As they walked out of the facility hand in hand beneath the clearing sky, Julian knew that Eleanor’s fortress had truly begun to crumble from within.
