Chapter 7: Unraveling the Father’s Last Secret

The private study of the Vance estate was supposed to be sealed pending the ongoing federal investigation, but with Detective Miller's authorization and a signed judicial access warrant, Julian and Jane stood among the towering mahogany bookshelves where their late father had spent his final years.

Dust motes danced in the shafts of afternoon sunlight piercing through the heavy velvet drapes. Jane ran her fingers gently along the spines of leather-bound law books, a bittersweet smile touching her lips.

"I remember sitting right there on the rug," Jane whispered softly, pointing toward the large antique fireplace. "Father used to read poetry to me before mother locked me away in that dreadful place. He always told me that truth and integrity were the only true legacy worth leaving behind."

Julian walked over to their father’s massive executive desk, where a heavy brass nameplate still bore the engraved letters: Arthur Vance, Founder & CEO.

"Mother always claimed father left her absolute control of the entire estate in his final will," Julian said, unlocking a bottom drawer with a small brass key he had recovered from Eleanor’s private dressing room. "She told us the board ratified it unanimously. But something never felt right about how quickly father’s health deteriorated right before he passed away."

Inside the drawer lay a weathered leather ledger labeled Private Confidant. Julian carefully lifted it, blowing a thin layer of dust off the cover. As he opened the pages, neat, handwritten entries in their father’s familiar cursive script filled page after page.

Jane stepped closer, peering over his shoulder. "What is that?"

"It’s father’s personal journal," Julian murmured, his eyes scanning the dense paragraphs. "Listen to this entry from two weeks before his death: 'Eleanor’s obsession with absolute corporate dominance has crossed every ethical boundary. She is systematically siphoning funds from the children's trust accounts into offshore accounts under her sole control. If she discovers I am amending the corporate charter to restore equal voting rights to Julian and Jane, I fear what she might do to protect her control.'"

Jane gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "She... she knew he was going to change the will?"

Julian turned another page, his breath catching in his throat. Attached to the back cover was a folded legal document stamped with the official seal of the state supreme court and signed by Arthur Vance, alongside two independent witnesses who had mysteriously retired to the Swiss Alps shortly after the funeral.

"It's the original, unamended master trust deed," Julian whispered, triumph surging through his veins. "Mother didn't just commit corporate fraud and child abuse—she forged father’s final testament to disinherit us completely and seize sole proprietorship of the entire conglomerate."

Jane began to weep, not with sorrow, but with the overwhelming realization that their father had never stopped loving or trying to protect them. "She stole our lives, Julian. Every single year of isolation, every tear, every lie—it was all built on a mountain of forged signatures and stolen identities."

"And today, that mountain comes crashing down," Julian said resolutely. He pulled out his phone and dialed Detective Miller's direct line. "Miller? We found the smoking gun. Bring a forensic document examiner to the estate immediately. We have all the proof we need to dismantle Eleanor’s empire brick by brick."
