Chapter 5: The Serpent’s Counter-Strike

The visiting room of the county detention center smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Behind the thick reinforced glass partition sat Eleanor Vance. Despite wearing the standard orange jumpsuit of an inmate awaiting trial, her posture remained rigidly aristocratic. Her silver hair was neatly pinned back, and her cold eyes radiated an undiminished, venomous fury.

The heavy steel door clicked open, and her high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Sterling—a man renowned for getting corporate embezzlers and corrupt politicians acquitted—stepped into the booth, sliding a leather briefcase onto the metal table.

"Well, Mr. Sterling?" Eleanor demanded without preamble, her voice low and sharp. "How long do I have to endure this pathetic charade before your firm rectifies this catastrophic oversight?"

Sterling pulled out a sleek silver pen and a notepad, sighing heavily before looking up at his formidable client. "Madame Eleanor, let’s be entirely transparent. The prosecution’s case is not an oversight—it is a meticulously constructed avalanche. The financial audit provided by your son contains ironclad paper trails of trust fund embezzlement spanning fifteen years. Furthermore, the pediatric medical reports for your granddaughter and the historical commitment records for Jane Vance have been unsealed by a federal judge."

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "My son is a sentimental fool who has been manipulated by disgruntled domestic staff. Those financial records were misconstrued, and the medical commitments were made in accordance with family privacy laws."

"The judge didn't see it that way, Eleanor," Sterling said flatly, leaning forward. "Bail was denied due to flight risk and witness intimidation concerns. We are looking at potential federal charges of grand larceny, abuse of a minor, and unlawful confinement. If this goes to a jury trial with public sentiment heavily favoring your son and the victims, you could face up to thirty years in a federal penitentiary."

For the first time, a microscopic crack appeared in Eleanor’s impenetrable armor. Her fingers twitched against the metal table. "Then we don't let it go to a jury trial. We settle. We offer a plea deal that keeps the estate intact and silences the dissenting voices."

"And how do you propose we silence Julian, Clara, and the psychiatric board?" Sterling countered, raising an eyebrow. "Julian holds the voting majority of the corporate board now, thanks to the emergency proxy transfers signed by minority shareholders who abandoned ship the moment the news broke. The Vance Corporation is slipping out of your hands as we speak."

Eleanor’s chest heaved with suppressed rage. "Then we launch a counter-offensive. We paint Julian as an unstable opportunist attempting a hostile takeover of a legacy estate. We hire public relations firms to dig into his past, twist his overseas business dealings, and discredit every single person standing against me."

Sterling shook his head slowly. "Madame, public opinion has already turned. The story is front-page news across every major financial and social publication. Fighting a media war against public sympathy right now is professional suicide."

"Then find another way, Mr. Sterling," Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "That estate is my life's work. I built it with blood, iron, and absolute discipline. I will not let a rebellious son and a handful of ungrateful peasants tear it down without a war."

Sterling stared at her for a long moment, realizing with chilling clarity that Eleanor Vance would rather see the entire family empire burn to ashes than admit defeat. He closed his briefcase with a sharp snap and stood up. "I will file the preliminary motions for suppression of evidence, Eleanor. But prepare yourself—this is going to be the fight of your life."
