Chapter 5: The Golden Cage Cracks

By noon the next day, Julian’s high-powered legal team, led by the ruthless defense attorney Vance Vance, had secured an emergency custody injunction.

Evelyn knew hiding in the shadows would only make her look guilty in front of a judge. Instead of hiding, she took a bold, calculated risk. She hired Maya Vance—a brilliant, fiercely independent family lawyer who had built a reputation fighting for survivors against corrupt elites.

Three days later, Evelyn stepped out onto the steps of the New York Family Court building. A sea of reporters and flashing cameras swarmed her.

Suddenly, a sleek black limousine pulled up. The door opened, and Eleanor Sterling stepped out, dripped in pearls and tailored cashmere, accompanied by two hulking bodyguards. Eleanor gestured for her security to block the reporters as she approached Evelyn.

"Evelyn," Eleanor said smoothly, her voice laced with ice and disdain. "Look at you. Living in filth, dragging my granddaughter into the mud. You have no money left. No allies. Julian’s legal team will tear you apart."

Eleanor reached into her leather handbag, pulled out a signed check, and held it out between two manicured fingers.

"Ten million dollars," Eleanor said softly, a cruel smirk playing on her lips. "Sign over full parental rights to Julian, pack your bags, and disappear to Europe. You get a life of luxury, and Lily stays where she belongs—with the Sterling legacy."

Evelyn looked at the check, then up into Eleanor’s cold, arrogant eyes. The media hushed, camera lenses focusing sharply on the standoff.

Evelyn took the check.

Eleanor smiled triumphantly. "I knew you had a price, darling."

Without saying a single word, Evelyn gripped the check with both hands and tore it right down the middle. She ripped it again, and again, until the pieces fluttered to the marble steps like confetti.

"My child is not a piece of real estate, Eleanor," Evelyn declared, her voice echoing clearly for every camera to capture. "And you don't have enough money in the world to buy her from me."

The crowd erupted into murmurs. Eleanor’s jaw tightened in furious humilation as Evelyn walked right past her into the courthouse, head held high.
