Chapter 8: Cornered Beast

The aftermath was catastrophic for the Sterling empire. Within twenty-four hours, the company’s stock plummeted by forty percent. The board of directors called an emergency meeting and officially ousted Julian as CEO, revoking his corporate security and freezing his company assets pending a federal audit.
Desperate, ruined, and facing public ruin, Julian unravelled.
That evening, a heavy thunderstorm slammed against Evelyn’s small upstate cabin. Lily was in her bedroom drawing pictures when the power suddenly cut out, plunging the house into darkness.
Evelyn immediately reached for her flashlight, her instincts screaming.
A loud thud echoed from the front porch. The door lock shattered, and the heavy wooden door burst open.
Julian stood in the doorway, soaked from the rain, his eyes wild and unhinged. He had bypassed his house arrest ankle monitor in a fit of rage.

Evelyn stepped back, positioning herself between Julian and the hallway leading to Lily’s room. She kept her voice calm, calculated, and steady.
"You destroyed yourself, Julian. Your greed and your cruelty did this."
"I am taking Lily," Julian growled, pulling a signed fake passport from his jacket. "We are leaving the country tonight. And if you try to stop me, I swear to God—"
"Julian," Evelyn interrupted smoothly, taking a slow step forward, looking him straight in the eyes without a flicker of fear. "Look down."
Julian paused, confused.
Evelyn reached into her jacket pocket and held up her phone. The screen was lit up green. She wasn't just recording—she was broadcasting a live feed directly to the local police precinct and Maya's legal team.

Outside, blue and red police lights suddenly illuminated the dark rain through the cabin windows. Sirens blared, surrounding the house.
"It's over, Julian," Evelyn said quietly. "You lost."
