Chapter 9: The Verdict of Justice

Chapter 9: The Verdict of Justice

Two months later. The Supreme Court of New York Family Division.

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Julian sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, handcuffed and flanked by guards, awaiting trial on federal fraud charges and felony breaking and entering. Eleanor sat behind him, stripped of her social status, looking frail, defeated, and abandoned by her high-society peers.

The judge slammed her gavel down, silencing the room.

"After reviewing all evidence, testimony, and the systemic financial abuse and intimidation tactics displayed by the defendant," Judge Vance declared firmly, looking down over her glasses at Julian, "this court finds that Julian Sterling poses a direct threat to the safety and well-being of his child."

The judge turned her gaze to Evelyn, her expression softening with profound respect.

"Full legal and physical custody of Lily Sterling is hereby granted exclusively to Evelyn Ross. A permanent restraining order is issued against Julian Sterling and Eleanor Sterling. Court is adjourned."

The courtroom erupted into applause.

Evelyn closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she felt like she had been holding for years. She turned around to see Lily running down the aisle toward her.

Evelyn dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide. Lily collided with her, wrapping her small arms tightly around her mother's neck.

"We did it, Mommy?" Lily whispered.

"We did it, my love," Evelyn cried softly, kissing her daughter's hair. "We're safe. Forever."
