Chapter 4: The Architect of Ruin

The cold, sterile interrogation room of the Los Angeles County Police Department offered no comfort. Elena sat shivering in a scratchy orange jumpsuit, the expensive remnants of her gala makeup completely washed away, leaving her looking hollow and deeply aged.

The heavy steel door swung open. It wasn't a detective. It was a man in a flawless, custom-tailored Italian suit. Viktor.

Elena’s eyes widened with a desperate, pathetic flash of hope. "Viktor! Oh, thank God. You brought your lawyers, right? You have to get me out of here. Julian is a madman, he almost killed me!"

Viktor slowly pulled out a metal chair and sat down, carefully adjusting his silk tie. He looked at her with the same detached, sociopathic amusement he had shown by the pool.

"Elena, my dear," Viktor sighed softly. "You have completely misunderstood our arrangement. I told you that if Julian were out of the picture, I would gladly help you manage Starlight Studios. I never told you to toss a child into my private aquatic exhibit in front of fifty witnesses."

"But you wanted his company!" Elena hissed, slamming her hands on the metal table. "You said his film studio was the only thing blocking your media monopoly. You told me if I secured the inheritance, you would buy it from me for double its worth! We had a deal!"

"A deal requires competence," Viktor smiled, his eyes dead and cold. "You failed. You broke the cardinal rule of high-stakes theater, Elena. You got caught on stage."

Elena’s blood ran completely cold. She suddenly realized she wasn't looking at an ally. She was looking at the man who was about to bury her to save himself.

"You set me up," she whispered, her voice trembling with absolute terror. "You knew Julian was watching. You let it happen so he would destroy me, and you could keep your hands clean while his life fell apart!"

"It makes for a much better narrative, doesn't it?" Viktor stood up, smoothing his jacket. "Julian is emotionally compromised. He will spend the next year fighting you in court, desperately trying to protect his daughter. While he’s distracted, his shareholders will panic. His stock will plummet. And I will initiate a hostile takeover of Starlight Studios for pennies on the dollar."

Viktor walked to the door, knocking twice for the guard.

"Viktor, please! I know too much! I’ll tell the police everything about your offshore accounts, about your illegal setups!" Elena screamed, lunging across the table.

May you like

Viktor didn't even flinch. "Tell them whatever you like, my dear. But remember, the inmates in the maximum-security wing are very... unpredictable. Accidents happen every day. Keep your mouth shut, and perhaps you’ll survive your sentence. Goodbye, Elena."

As the heavy steel door slammed shut, Elena collapsed onto the concrete floor, finally realizing she was entirely, hopelessly alone in the dark.
