Chapter 3 : The Theatre of Cruelty

Chapter 3 : The Theatre of Cruelty
Doña Victoria threw herself open to the humid evening air just as two patrol cars screeched to a halt against the curb. Her pristine silk blouse was intentionally disheveled, her hair yanked free from its elegant pins.

"Officers! Oh, thank God you're here!" she wailed, her voice carrying across the lawns to where the neighbors stood watching from their porches. She collapsed onto her knees on the front steps, pointing a shaking, manicured finger back into the house. "My son... he’s lost his mind! He’s suffered a psychological break from the war! He’s threatening us with a weapon!"
The two arriving officers pulled their service weapons from their holsters, their postures instantly turning rigid as they moved into a tactical approach up the driveway.
"Ma'am, stay down! Step away from the door!" the lead officer, a burly sergeant named Miller, commanded.
Inside the kitchen, Alejandro didn't flinch. He didn't rush to the window, and he didn't pull his hands toward his belt. He slowly placed his phone on the counter, his palms flat and visible, his eyes locked on the hallway. He looked down at me, his gaze softening for a fraction of a second. "Stay behind the island, Elena. Don't move your hands from your belly."
"Alejandro, they're going to shoot," I whispered, my voice cracking as the blue and red lights strobe-flashed against the kitchen tiles, painting the scattered lily petals in shades of crimson and violet.
"They aren't going to do anything, sweetheart," he said, his voice a low, steady frequency anchored in years of battlefield command. "I've already bypassed the local dispatch."
Sergeant Miller burst through the front door, his firearm raised. "Police! Nobody move! Put your hands on your—"
The officer froze.
Alejandro stood perfectly still in the center of the kitchen, dressed in his full, dust-caked Army combat uniform, his Captain’s bars gleaming dully under the fluorescent light. He didn't look like a man having a psychotic break; he looked like a monument carved out of granite.
"Sergeant," Alejandro said, his tone entirely conversational yet carrying an absolute, unyielding authority. "I am Captain Alejandro Vance, United States Army. I am the homeowner. My wife is eight months pregnant and has just been subjected to an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted forced extortion."
Miller lowered his weapon slightly, his brow furrowing as his eyes moved from Alejandro’s calm demeanor to the table. "Sir, the woman outside claims—"
"The woman outside is my mother, Victoria Vance," Alejandro interrupted smoothly. "And if you check your vehicle’s terminal right now, you will find an overriding active federal warrant issued twenty minutes ago by the criminal investigation division of Fort Bliss."

Before Miller could respond, his shoulder radio crackled violently to life, the dispatcher's voice cutting through the tense silence of the room.
"Unit two-two, be advised. We have a high-priority verification from federal authorities. The owner of the residence is an active-duty officer. Local charges are to be deferred to the arriving federal marshals. Re-route your custody focus to the female suspect outside, Victoria Vance, for fraud, identity theft, and treasonous forgery of Department of Defense documents."
