Chapter 4 : The Paper Empire

The theatrical tears on Doña Victoria’s face dried instantly as the steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. She didn't scream this time; she went completely rigid, her aristocratic composure hardening into a mask of pure, venomous disbelief as she was guided into the back of a transport vehicle.

By midnight, the house was silent again. The police had gone, leaving behind only the cold, mechanical hum of the refrigerator and the faint, burnt scent of the iron, which had finally cooled on the counter.

Alejandro sat on the floor beside my chair, his heavy combat boots tucked beneath him, his large, calloused hands gently resting over mine on my belly. For the past three hours, a military legal specialist had been inside our study, systematically logging every piece of evidence Victoria had left behind.

"She told me you were gone, Alejandro," I whispered, the exhaustion finally pulling at my eyes as a tear tracked through the dust on his uniform sleeve. "She showed me the letter with the official seal. She said if I didn't sign the custody transfer to her estate before the baby was born, the state would declare me mentally incompetent and take him anyway."

"I know, Elena. I know," he murmured, pressing his forehead against my hands. His shoulders, usually so straight, trembled slightly with the weight of the horror he had walked into. "When my deployment schedule was altered six months ago, my mail routing was mysteriously diverted to a private post office box in her neighborhood. She was intercepting my satellite calls, telling the base registry that you were in a private sanitarium and couldn't receive communications."

"But the medical notes..." I pointed toward the table where the forged psychiatric assessments lay. "How did she get those?"

A sharp, tailored woman in a dark civilian suit stepped out of the study, holding a secure digital drive. It was Special Agent Vance—no relation, an irony that the military investigator noted with a grim smile.

"We found the digital templates on her personal laptop, Captain," Agent Vance reported. "Doña Victoria didn't just forge your casualty notice. She was using a compromised administrative login from a medical clinic her family foundation funds downtown. She was systematically uploading fake telehealth logs into Elena's civilian insurance profile to build a legal paper trail of 'postpartum readiness failure' before the child was even born."

The sheer, calculated malice of it made my stomach turn. She hadn't just wanted my baby; she had wanted to erase my entire existence from the legal record, turning me into a nameless ghost while she raised the next Vance heir under her own terms.

"The inheritance structure of your grandfather’s trust, Alejandro," the investigator continued, sliding a final document across the counter. "It stipulates that if you died in service without a legally recognized, competent spouse, the entire three-hundred-million-dollar real estate portfolio reverted exclusively to Victoria's management. She wasn't just trying to be a grandmother. She was protecting her liquidity."
