Chapter 5 : The True Legacy

Chapter 4: The True Legacy
Six months later, the suffocating atmosphere of the Vance family estate was completely gone, replaced by the bright, chaotic warmth of a true home.
The heavy, dark drapes in the dining room had been replaced by large, sunlit glass windows that looked out over a garden filled with blooming white lilies—not scattered and crushed, but rooted deeply in the earth, growing strong under the afternoon sun.
I stood near the nursery window, wearing a comfortable, flowing dress, watching Alejandro through the glass. He was sitting in a wooden rocking chair, his uniform replaced by a soft flannel shirt, his large hands expertly cradling our five-month-old son, little Mateo. The baby had his father’s bright, curious eyes, entirely untouched by the darkness that had surrounded his birth.
The trial of Victoria Vance had been brief and absolute. The federal government didn't take kindly to civilian syndicates forging casualty notifications to defraud active-duty officers. Stripped of her wealth, her elite social standing, and her family's legal protection, she had been sentenced to twelve years in a federal correctional facility, her name permanently erased from the Vance Trust.
Alejandro looked up, catching my eye through the window. A brilliant, unstoppable smile broke across his face—the look of a man who had fought a war overseas only to come home and win the only battle that ever truly mattered.
He stood up, gently resting Mateo against his shoulder, and walked out onto the patio to join me.
"He’s gained another pound, Elena," Alejandro laughed softly, wrapping his free arm around my waist and pulling me close against his chest. "The pediatrician says he’s completely ahead of the growth chart."

"That’s because he doesn't have a single reason to look back," I smiled, leaning up to press a soft kiss against my husband's cheek.
The old world, the forged letters, and the terrifying shadow of the scorched iron were nothing but a distant, fading memory. They had tried to build a perfect cage out of money, isolation, and lies, believing that because I was alone, I could be broken. But they had forgotten the ultimate law of a real family: when you fight for the people you love, the truth isn't just a shield—it's an empire that can never be destroyed.
