Chapter 5: Unraveling the Web

Two days after the emergency delivery, the atmosphere in my hospital room was heavy.

Ethan and Maya were stable in incubators, breathing on CPAP machines, but their tiny bodies needed weeks of care before they could safely come home. Daniel barely slept, dividing his time between hovering over our babies' incubators and sitting by my bedside.

A knock sounded at the door. Detective Miller from the local police precinct stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling up a chair. "I have an update regarding your sister, Vanessa."

Daniel’s jaw set into a hard line. "Have you found her?"

"Not yet, but we've uncovered why she committed this break-in," the detective explained, opening the file. "Three months ago, Vanessa got entangled in an illegal offshore cryptocurrency trading ring. She took out high-interest loans from unregistered predatory lenders to cover her losses. When her debts ballooned to over two hundred thousand dollars, the lenders began threatening her."

I looked at Daniel in shock. "Two hundred thousand dollars?"

"She was desperate," Detective Miller continued. "She knew about your children's trust fund and believed that if she could secure those funds, she could pay off her debt and disappear. When Mrs. Vance refused to cooperate, Vanessa panicked, stole your car, and went on the run."

Daniel placed his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with a mixture of anger and deep grief. "She was my sister. If she had just come to me and told me she was in trouble, I would have helped her get legal protection. Instead... she almost killed my wife and my unborn children."

"We have issued a statewide felony warrant for her arrest," Detective Miller stated firmly. "Aggravated assault, home invasion, grand theft, and reckless endangerment."

As the detective left, Daniel took my hand, resting his forehead against mine. "I promise you, Sarah. I will never let her—or anyone else—endanger our family again."
