Chapter 7: The Mastermind Exposed
Before Vanessa could run, the security officers restrained her, pressing her against the wall as Detective Miller and two uniformed officers rushed down the corridor.
"Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest," Detective Miller announced, clapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Daniel! Tell them!" Vanessa screamed as they led her away, her voice echoing off the sterile walls. "They're going to kill me! They're coming for you!"
Daniel, who had just stepped off the elevator with two cups of coffee, watched his sister being escorted toward the service exit. He didn't yell. He didn't show anger. There was only a profound, mournful sadness in his eyes.
"Detective," Daniel called out, stepping forward. "She mentioned loan sharks tracking her to this hospital. If those criminals are lurking in this parking lot, my family is in danger."
Detective Miller nodded grimly. "We intercepted text messages on your sister's phone when she was apprehended. The ringleader of the extortion scheme is a man named Marcus Kane. He’s currently waiting in a black SUV in the subterranean parking garage, expecting Vanessa to bring him the trust authorization."
"Use me," Daniel said without hesitation.
"Daniel, no!" I gasped, grabbing his wrist. "It's too dangerous!"
"I have to, Sarah," Daniel said gently, kneeling beside my wheelchair and kissing my knuckles. "These people threatened you, and they threatened our children. As long as Kane is free, our lives will never be safe. I'm ending this tonight."
Working quickly with the police, Daniel agreed to act as bait. Accompanied by undercover officers disguised as hospital staff, Daniel walked down to the subterranean garage holding a thick paper folder.
