Chapter 6: A Shadow in the NICU

Chapter 6: A Shadow in the NICU

Late on a Tuesday night, the hospital corridor was quiet, bathed in dim nightlights. Daniel had gone down to the cafeteria to grab coffee, leaving me sitting in a wheelchair right outside the NICU glass window, watching little Ethan and Maya sleep inside their incubators.

A soft footstep sounded behind me.

"Sarah..." a trembling voice whispered.

I spun my wheelchair around. Standing in the shadows near the linen closet was a figure wearing oversized grey scrubs and a medical mask. She pulled the mask down, revealing a pale, hollowed-out face with dark circles under her eyes.

It was Vanessa.

I instinctively recoiled, reaching for the emergency call button attached to my armrest. "Get away from me!"

"Please! Don't press it!" Vanessa pleaded, falling to her knees on the linoleum floor, her hands clasped together in desperate entreaty. "I only have five minutes before security spots me! I had to see you!"

"You assault me, leave me locked in a house in active labor, and now you stalk me into a hospital?!" My voice trembled with indignation. "Have you lost your mind?"

"I didn't know you would go into labor! I swear I didn't mean to hurt the babies!" tears spilled down her gaunt cheeks. "The people I owe money to... they followed me here, Sarah. They told me if I don't give them the money by tomorrow morning, they will hurt Daniel. They know where he parks his car!"

I stared at her, horrified not just by her words, but by the utter destruction her choices had wrought.

"You brought monsters to our doorstep, Vanessa," I said softly, my voice cold and steady. "And instead of taking responsibility, you're asking me to shield you from the consequences of your own greed."

"I'm your family!" she sobbed.

"Family protects each other," I replied, pointing toward the end of the hallway where two armed hospital security officers were approaching. "You stopped being family the moment you put my children's lives at risk."
