The night before the wedding was impossibly quiet.
Long after the laughter faded and the fairy lights flickered out, Nathan sat alone in his private study, holding a small velvet box containing the wedding bands. They weren't encrusted with diamonds or bought from Fifth Avenue jewelers. They were forged from melted-down antique gold from both their families—a literal union of their histories, their struggles, and their triumphs.
He walked over to the tall French doors, looking out across the moonlit lawn toward the newly completed Lily Parker Community Center downtown, its glowing windows visible even from a distance.
He thought about the road that had brought them here—the cold indifference of high society, the venom of the board, the false accusations, and the fragile, innocent courage of a little girl who pointed a finger at a broken glass and changed the course of destiny.
In the room down the hall, Maria stood by the open window, breathing in the cool autumn air. Lily was curled up asleep in the large canopy bed, clutching a small stuffed rabbit, her face peaceful and untroubled.
