Chapter 9: The Shadow of the Past

While peace reigned within the walls of the estate, the boardrooms of Whitmore Enterprises told a different story.

Marcus Vance, the senior managing partner of the firm and a longtime ally of Vanessa Sterling’s family, sat at the head of the polished boardroom table. Across from him sat three junior executives, all nervously shuffling papers.

“Nathan is making a catastrophic mistake,” Marcus declared, his voice cutting through the tense silence of the room. “A conglomerate of our stature relies on stability, alliance, and impeccable social standing. If the Whitmore name is tied to a woman with no lineage, no corporate backing, and a working-class background, our upcoming merger with the European textile group will be jeopardized.”

“Mr. Vance,” a young financial analyst named David ventured cautiously, adjusting his glasses. “The latest quarter reports show that since Nathan took complete control and refocused our philanthropic efforts on local community centers—inspired largely by the Parker family—our public approval rating has skyrocketed by forty percent. Investors love the authenticity.”

Marcus shot David a look of pure disdain. “Investors love dividends, David. Authenticity doesn't pay quarterly returns. Vanessa Sterling has assured me that her family’s syndicate is willing to inject twenty million dollars into our expansion fund—if the board steps in to advise Nathan on his personal affairs.”

“Are we seriously entertaining blackmail from Vanessa?” David asked, his voice rising in disbelief. “Everyone in this building knows Vanessa was the one who manipulated the financial records eighteen months ago to frame Maria’s uncle. She almost destroyed this company!”

“She did not frame anyone,” Marcus snapped, slamming his palm onto the mahogany table. “The matter was settled quietly to protect the company's reputation. And it will remain settled. Our objective now is simple: protect the Whitmore legacy from an unsuitable union.”

Later that afternoon, the news of the board’s quiet maneuver reached the estate.

Nathan stood in his private study, staring at an encrypted email forwarded by David from inside the corporate office. The message was clear: Marcus Vance was calling an emergency board meeting for Friday morning, ostensibly to review the European merger, but the hidden agenda was a vote of no confidence in Nathan’s leadership, citing his impending marriage as a "conflict of interest."

The door opened softly, and Maria walked in carrying a tray with a cup of chamomile tea. She stopped when she saw the tight, rigid line of Nathan’s jaw.

“You’re angry,” Maria said quietly, setting the tray down on the edge of the desk. “What did the office send over?”

Nathan looked up, his eyes dark with frustration. He didn't want to burden her with the ugly politics of his world, but hiding things from her was no longer an option. He pushed the laptop toward her.

Maria read the email. Her expression didn't falter; instead, a steely, quiet resolve settled over her features—the same resilience that had kept her and Lily afloat during the hardest years of their lives.

“They’re trying to use me to push you out,” Maria said softly.

“They’re terrified,” Nathan corrected, standing up and walking around the desk to stand directly in front of her. “They’re terrified of losing control over a machine they’ve milked for decades. Marcus Vance thinks he can intimidate me.”

“And can he?” Maria asked, looking up into his eyes.

Nathan smiled, a fierce, protective expression crossing his face. “Marcus has forgotten one crucial detail. My grandfather built this company on steel and rail, but he also taught me that a house built on corruption always collapses from within. I didn't spend eighteen months cleaning out the rot in this family just to let a few board members dictate who I love.”

“Nathan, we shouldn't let my presence cost you your company,” Maria said, her voice laced with sudden worry. “If the board revolts—”

“Let them,” Nathan interrupted, taking her face gently in his hands. “Let them try to take the title, the office, the shares. Without you, without Lily, this house is just empty stone and cold glass. But together? We’re unbreakable.”

Maria leaned into his touch, closing her eyes for a moment as the warmth of his hands washed away her doubts. But neither of them knew that Marcus Vance had already set a trap—one that would force them to fight not just for their future, but for the very truth of their past.
