Chapter 10 - THE CRASHThe hallway outside the courtroom was a scene of absolute devastation.

Two police officers had arrived to detain Margaret pending the DA’s arrival. They placed her in handcuffs. The cold click of the metal echoed in the marble hallway. It sounded exactly like the chain on the porch.
Margaret didn't scream. She didn't cry. She stared at me with eyes so full of poison I thought they might burn through my skin.
“You think you’ve won?” Margaret sneered as the officers led her past me. “Arthur’s estate will be frozen. Daniel gets nothing. You get nothing.”
“I have my daughter,” I said. “That was all I ever wanted.”
As they led her away, Daniel approached me. He was weeping. Real, ugly tears stained his face. He reached out to touch my arm, but I stepped back.
“Claire, please,” Daniel choked out. “I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know about any of it. The bribes, Elias... my whole life is a lie. You’re the only real thing I have left. Please, let me come home. Let me see Sophie.”
I looked at the man I had loved. The father of my child. And I felt absolutely nothing. No pity. No anger. Just a cold, vast emptiness.
“You didn't know about Elias,” I agreed softly. “You didn't know about the bribes. But you knew what your mother did to Sophie on that porch. You saw the chain, Daniel. You saw her crying in the dirt.”
“I was confused—”
“You slapped me!” My voice echoed down the hall, sharp as glass. “You struck me to defend the woman who chained your child like a dog. You looked at Sophie when she begged you for help, and you looked away.”
Daniel fell to his knees on the marble floor. He didn't care who was watching. He sobbed into his hands.
May you like
“I will never let a man who looks away back into my daughter's life,” I said. “Sign the divorce papers, Daniel. Or I will take you to court for the assault on the porch, and I will make sure you see the inside of a cell right next to your mother.”
I turned and walked away. The sound of his weeping faded with every step I took toward the sunlight.
