Chapter 14 - THE UNBROKEN CHAINOne year later.

The waves crashed gently against the shore of the Hamptons estate. The summer breeze smelled of salt and sweet blooming hydrangeas.

I stood on the expansive back deck, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the scene unfold on the pristine green lawn below.

It was Sophie’s sixth birthday.

There were no stuffy society wives. There were no fake friends. Marcus was there, grilling hotdogs with his husband. My old friends from the paralegal firm were drinking beers on the patio chairs.

And in the center of the lawn, running through the sprinklers, was Sophie.

She wore a bright yellow swimsuit. Her laughter echoed over the sound of the ocean, loud, joyous, and completely free. She wasn't a pawn in a billionaire’s game. She wasn't a secret to be hidden or a child to be shamed.

She was just a little girl.

I walked down the wooden stairs to the grass. “Mommy! Look!” Sophie yelled, holding up a perfect, intact seashell she had found near the water.

“It’s beautiful, baby,” I smiled, kneeling in the grass to examine it.

She threw her wet arms around my neck, hugging me tight. I smelled the chlorine, the sea salt, and the sweet strawberry scent of her shampoo. I closed my eyes and held her close.

There were no chains here. The metal links that had bound us to the Bennett family, to their lies, their money, and their cruelty, had all been shattered. I had broken them myself.

I stood up, holding my daughter’s hand, and walked with her toward the ocean. The tide was coming in, washing away the footprints in the sand, leaving the shore perfectly clean. Ready for a new beginning.
