Chapter 6 - THE SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXI packed our bags in three minutes flat. We climbed out the small window in the motel bathroom, bypassing Daniel and his lawyer entirely. We took a cab to a rental car agency, paying in cash I had withdrawn weeks ago for emergencies.

I had twenty-four hours before I became a fugitive.
I drove straight to downtown Manhattan, to the towering glass and steel facade of Liberty National Bank. Arthur Bennett had been a man of secrets. A week before he died, he had visited our house for Sunday dinner. He had slipped a small, brass key into my hand while Daniel was in the kitchen. “Just in case Margaret ever loses her mind, Claire. You’re the only one I trust.”
I had kept the key hidden in the lining of my winter coat for three years.
I left Sophie in the car with a trusted teenage babysitter—my old neighbor’s daughter, who thought we were just having a fun city day—and walked into the bank.
The vault was cold. The attendant led me to Box 812, accepted my key, and left me alone.
Inside the long metal box was a single, leather-bound journal and a stack of faded photographs.
I opened the journal. The handwriting was Arthur’s—sharp and precise. I flipped through the pages, my eyes scanning decades of financial records, until I hit an entry dated thirty-one years ago.
Margaret is pregnant. The timing is impossible. I have been in London for three months. She swears it is a miracle, but I know the truth. Elias Thorne has been circling her at the country club. I will raise the boy as my own to protect the company's stock from a scandal, but I will never let Elias’s bastard inherit my father's legacy.
My blood ran cold. Elias Thorne.
Elias Thorne wasn't just a man. He was a ruthless corporate raider, a billionaire hedge fund manager known for destroying companies and leaving ruins in his wake. He was Arthur Bennett’s greatest business rival.
Margaret hadn’t just had an affair. She had slept with the enemy. And Daniel was the result.

I flipped to the back of the journal. Taped to the inside cover was a signed, notarized affidavit from Arthur Bennett, officially contesting his paternity of Daniel, dated two days before his death.
Margaret hadn't just chained my daughter. Margaret had murdered her husband to stop him from filing this document.
