The standoff continued for forty-eight hours. The mansion became a fortress of legal briefs and media speculation. Arthur’s attempt to paint his wife as a villain backfired when the documents in the 'Exit Strategy' file were leaked to the public, not by the women, but by one of Arthur’s disgruntled subordinates who had seen the writing on the wall.
The fallout was spectacular. Stock prices plummeted. Investors scrambled to distance themselves. But the real drama was personal. Arthur had sent a series of messages to Clara, alternating between savage insults and pathetic pleas for forgiveness. He relied on her empathy, her history of bending to his will.
Clara spent the night in the library, rereading the messages. The old Clara would have crumbled, would have felt guilty, would have returned to the 'fortress' to keep the peace. When Arthur received the message, his retaliation was swift. He leaked a fabricated story to a tabloid, claiming Clara was involved in a scandal with a business rival. It was a classic "dirty tricks" move. The internet, however, had turned. The public was tired of the 'Vance' tyranny. Instead of attacking Clara, the story was met with skepticism and viral support for her, using the hashtag #FreeClara. The tables had turned completely. The hunter had become the prey of public scrutiny.
