Chapter 5 — The Empty Penthouse

Chapter 5 — The Empty Penthouse

Driven by panic and rage, Jasper rushed back to his luxury penthouse in the city's most exclusive high-rise. He needed to find Hailey. He was convinced that if he could just get in front of her, manipulate her emotions, and play the victim as he had done so many times during their marriage, she would forgive him and tell her father to stand down.

"She loves me," Jasper muttered to himself inside the elevator. "She’s soft. She’s fragile. She always forgives me."

He unlocked the penthouse door and slammed it open. "Hailey!" he shouted. "Hailey, we need to talk right now! You’ve gone way too far this time!"

Silence answered him.

The living room was quiet, sunlight pouring across the polished marble floors. But something was distinctly wrong.

Jasper walked briskly down the hallway toward the master bedroom. He pushed the door open—and stopped dead in his tracks.

The room was completely bare of Hailey’s belongings. Her clothes, her shoes, her books, her artwork—everything that belonged to her was gone. Even the nursery, which was supposed to be filled with the baby furniture he had refused to help assemble, was completely empty.

On the sleek glass coffee table in the living room sat a single, thick white envelope.

Jasper walked over, his hands trembling as he tore it open. Inside was not a emotional love letter or an apology.

It was a formal Complaint for Absolute Divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, mental cruelty, and abandonment.

Attached to the divorce papers was a restraining order preventing Jasper, Gillian, and Priscilla from coming within five hundred feet of Hailey Robertson or baby Toby.

At the bottom of the stack was a personal, handwritten note on heavy cream cardstock. The handwriting was neat, elegant, and instantly recognizable.

Jasper,

For four years, I stayed quiet because I foolishly believed love meant enduring mistreatment. I allowed you and your family to diminish me, to make me feel small, and to make me beg for the bare minimum of human decency.

When you left me to walk out of that hospital alone after bringing our son into the world, you made your choice. You chose your pride, your greed, and your family's arrogance over the woman who gave you everything.

You always told me I was nothing without you.

Now, let’s see what you are without me.

— Hailey

Jasper stared at the paper, his breathing shallow and rapid.

"This is ridiculous!" he screamed to the empty room, ripping the note in half. "You think you can ruin me? I built this life!"

At that exact moment, the front door lock chimed.

Jasper turned, expecting to see Hailey walking in to negotiate. Instead, three uniformed officers from the Sheriff’s Department entered, accompanied by the building’s property manager.

"Jasper Lawson?" the lead officer asked.

"Yes! What is the meaning of this?"

The manager stepped forward nervously. "Mr. Lawson, this residential unit is registered under Robertson Real Estate Asset Management. We have received an immediate termination of lease notice. You have two hours to pack one suitcase of personal clothing and vacate the premises."

Jasper backed away, his eyes wide. "Vacate? This is my home!"

"Not anymore, sir," the officer replied calmly, tapping his holster. "Please cooperate, or we will be forced to arrest you for criminal trespass."
