Chapter 7 — The Gala of Reckoning

Chapter 7 — The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in crystal light and filled with the city’s highest-ranking corporate titans, politicians, and socialites. The Metropolitan Executive Leadership Summit was the premier event of the year, a place where multi-million-dollar deals were celebrated and social hierarchies were enforced.

Jasper Lawson stood near the champagne fountain, feeling utterly out of place.

His life over the last month had devolved into a nightmare. His bank accounts remained frozen under legal review, his company was on the brink of bankruptcy without Robertson capital, and he was currently living in a cramped, two-bedroom rented apartment with his mother and sister.

Yet, Gillian and Priscilla had insisted they attend the gala using their leftover invitations from earlier in the year.

"We have to be seen, Jasper," Gillian had argued, dabbing on heavy perfume. "If the business community sees us hiding, they’ll know we’re struggling. We need to find new investors tonight!"

Priscilla stood beside Jasper, wearing an old dress from two seasons ago, nervously sipping cheap wine. "Jasper, people are looking at us. Why is everyone whispering?"

"Just keep smiling," Jasper muttered through teeth clenched tight. "Once I explain to the board members here that Hailey is behind this vendetta, they'll realize I'm the victim of a vindictive ex-wife."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

The master of ceremonies stepped forward, his voice booming clearly across the grand hall.

"Presenting the Chairman of Robertson Global Corporation, Mr. Finnley Robertson... accompanied by the newly appointed Vice Chair of the Executive Board, Miss Hailey Robertson!"

A collective gasp echoed across the room.

Jasper froze, his glass hovering inches from his lips.

Walking down the grand marble staircase on the arm of Finnley Robertson was Hailey.

She was utterly breathtaking. She wore an emerald green silk gown that draped flawlessly over her restored, elegant figure. Her dark hair was styled in soft, regal waves, and around her neck gleamed a heirloom diamond necklace that had once belonged to the matriarch of the Robertson empire.

She moved with an effortless, undeniable grace, her eyes bright, posture proud, and expression glowing with supreme confidence. Beside her, Daniel Cross and a team of high-level security officers followed at a respectful distance.

"Is that... Hailey?" Priscilla whispered, her jaw dropping in absolute shock. "She... she looks like royalty."

Gillian’s face turned pale. "Vice Chair? She’s running Robertson Global?"

Jasper stared, unable to pull his eyes away. For four years, he had seen Hailey in simple faded sweaters, cooking his meals, quietly accepting his family’s cruel insults. He had convinced himself she was ordinary.

Seeing her now, standing at the pinnacle of elite society, surrounded by senators and Fortune 500 CEOs who hurried over to shake her hand, Jasper felt a sickening wave of regret crash over him.

Hailey moved through the crowd effortlessly, engaging in sharp, brilliant dialogue with foreign investors and industry leaders. She didn't look like a victim. She looked like a queen who had returned to claim her crown.

As she made her way across the ballroom, her eyes briefly swept over the crowd—and landed directly on Jasper.

For a brief second, their eyes met.

Hailey didn't look angry. She didn't look bitter.

She looked right through him, as if he were nothing more than a stranger standing in the crowd.
