Chapter 2 : The Verdict of the Heart

The doctor’s silence felt like an eternity, a void where hope and despair wrestled for dominance. He pulled back slightly, his eyes reflecting the exhaustion of a long, brutal night. "Mr. Vance, your wife has sustained severe internal trauma. The impact was… significant." He hesitated, his professional mask flickering. "However, I have some news. Chloe is stable for the moment. The surgery successfully stopped the internal hemorrhaging, and by some miracle, the baby has maintained a steady heartbeat throughout."

Ethan’s knees gave way. He didn't fall; he crumbled, burying his face in his blood-stained hands as a sob, ragged and unbidden, tore from his chest. "Thank you," he wept. "Oh, thank God."

"She is in a medically induced coma to allow her body to heal from the shock," the doctor continued, his voice softer now. "The next forty-eight hours are critical. If she doesn't wake, we will have to make some difficult decisions regarding the pregnancy. But for now, they are fighting."

Ethan looked up, his face gaunt, his eyes rimmed with red. "Can I see her?"

"Just for a moment," the doctor agreed. "But Ethan, you need to understand: the trauma was not just physical. She will have a long road ahead of her."

As Ethan walked into the sterile, blue-lit room, he found Chloe looking smaller than he had ever seen her. Tubes and monitors hummed in the background, a mechanical lullaby for his broken world. He touched her hand, her skin now warmed by medical care, and felt a flicker of life. He leaned close to her ear, his voice a low, fierce whisper. "You stay here, Chloe. You fight for us. Victoria is going to pay for every second of this."
