As the police dismantled her life, they inadvertently dismantled the very empire she had tried to save.
Ethan, keeping a vigil by Chloe’s bedside, watched the news on the hospital television. He saw the headlines—Vance Empire Collapsing Under Investigation; Inheritance Lawsuit Filed. He felt a strange, cold detachment. The money, the status, the "ivory gates" of their estate—it was all ash.
A nurse entered, her face bright. "Mr. Vance? She’s moving. Her vitals are responding to your voice."
Ethan rushed to the bed. Chloe’s eyelids were fluttering, fighting against the heavy sedatives. "Chloe?" he breathed, his hand hovering over hers. "I’m here. You’re safe."
Her eyes opened, unfocused at first, then centering on him. She looked down at her stomach, her hand instinctively reaching for it. Ethan caught her hand, tears streaming down his face. "The baby is okay, Chloe. We’re both okay."
