Chapter 3: The Ghost of Grayson

Chapter 3: The Ghost of Grayson

The city looked different from the window of a run-down apartment in the outskirts of Chicago. It wasn’t the sprawling, sparkling metropolis Marcus Grayson had once commanded from a mahogany-paneled office on the 50th floor. Here, the streetlights flickered, and the sound of distant sirens was the only lullaby.

Marcus had been in “exile” for three month

s. The Grayson name, once his armor, had become his scarlet letter. When he tried to apply for jobs—even low-level consultancy roles—he was met with doors slammed in his face or, worse, the pitying stares of former subordinates who now occupied seats of power he once held.

He had traded his bespoke Italian suits for flannels and worn denim. He worked nights at a logistics warehouse, his hands calloused and raw from hauling crates. It was the first time in his life he was judged solely by the sweat on his brow rather than the signature on his checks.

One evening, while walking home, he saw a familiar face across the street. It was David, his former assistant. David was stepping out of a high-end restaurant, laughing with a woman who looked suspiciously like Elena. The sight sent a spike of cold fury through Marcus, but it vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by a hollow ache. He realized he didn't hate David; he envied him. David still had a place in the world. Marcus was a ghost haunting his own life.

He retreated to his small room and pulled out the crumpled ribbon Maya had given him. He had taped it to his bedside lamp. That night, he made a decision. He wasn't going to fight for his money. He was going to fight for his daughter.
