Chapter 4: Echoes in the Concrete
Three hundred miles away, the harsh fluorescent lights of the federal penitentiary hummed a relentless, dreary tune against the cold concrete walls.
Evelyn sat rigidly on a bolted metal stool inside the communal recreation area. Her once-impeccable designer dresses had been replaced by a coarse, orange jumpsuit that felt heavy and suffocating. Her hair, previously pinned with aristocratic precision, fell in drab, unstyled strands around her hollow, exhausted face.
The other inmates kept a wide, deliberate berth. Evelyn’s fierce, venomous temper had not translated well into prison hierarchy; stripped of her wealth, her lawyers, and her title, she was just another inmate—isolated, bitter, and entirely powerless.
A female guard stepped up to the reinforced glass partition, tapping her baton sharply against the metal frame. "Vance. Visitor."
Evelyn didn't move for a moment. Her legal team had abandoned her months ago after her assets were completely seized by the federal government to pay back defrauded investors. With a sneer of bitter defiance, she stood up, her joints aching from the damp concrete, and shuffled toward the designated visitation booth.

Sitting on the other side of the thick, smudged glass was a junior attorney from her former legal firm—someone she had once routinely humiliated in front of the entire executive board.
Evelyn picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver, pressing it to her ear. She sneered, her eyes flashing with a spark of her old, unyielding arrogance. "Did you finally find a loophole in the indictment? Are the appellate judges ready to throw out Victor’s fraudulent evidence?"
The young lawyer looked at her with a mix of pity and cold detachment. "There are no loopholes, Evelyn. The conviction stands. I’m here because of a final asset liquidation notice from the federal bankruptcy court."
"My personal holdings..." Evelyn hissed, gripping the edges of the plastic phone. "They can't touch my offshore holdings in the Caymans. I structured those accounts myself!"
"The federal investigators tracked every single cent using the encrypted ledger Sarah Jenkins recovered," the lawyer replied flatly. "Your offshore accounts were frozen and repatriated yesterday. Every penny you stole has been returned to the corporate trust to rebuild the employee pension funds."
Evelyn’s breath hitched. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking skeletal under the harsh prison lights. "No... no, that was my life's work. I built that empire out of nothing. Those ungrateful cowards stole everything from me!"

"You built an empire of sand, Evelyn," the lawyer said quietly, standing up and sliding his chair back. "And the tide finally came in."
Before Evelyn could shriek another threat, the lawyer hung up the receiver and walked out of the visitation room. Evelyn sat frozen in her metal chair, staring blindly at her own reflection in the smudged glass. The grand CEO, the untouchable titan of industry, was completely gone. There was only an empty shell, trapped forever in the very darkness she had tried to inflict upon others.
