Chapter 1 - The Brother at the Gate

For several seconds, nobody in the study moved.

My late wife’s face remained frozen on the laptop screen.

Claire had been dead for almost two years, yet her warning had just reached across the grave and torn apart everything I thought I knew.

Victoria stood between two security guards, breathing hard.

Grace remained beside Noah, one protective arm around his shoulders.

I stared at the legal petition on the desk.

My brother’s signature was unmistakable.

Ethan Mercer.

My younger brother.

My best man.

The uncle Noah trusted enough to call whenever he was afraid.

I picked up my phone.

“Lock every entrance to the estate.”

The head of security hesitated.

“Sir?”

“My brother has access codes.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You think Ethan is stupid enough to come here now?”

I looked at her.

“You’re still afraid he might.”

Her smile disappeared.

Then the security radio crackled.

“Mr. Mercer, we have a vehicle approaching the west gate.”

My pulse changed instantly.

“What vehicle?”

“A black Range Rover.”

I knew that car.

Ethan had bought it six months earlier.

Noah gripped my jacket.

“Is Uncle Ethan coming?”

I crouched in front of him.

“Grace is going to take you upstairs.”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“No more sending me away when adults are lying.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Claire had always told me Noah noticed more than people realized.

I had ignored that truth.

I would not ignore it again.

“You’re right.”

I touched his shoulder gently.

“But I need you somewhere safe.”

He looked toward Victoria.

“She hurt Grace because Grace wouldn’t make me call her Mom.”

Grace lowered her eyes.

Victoria snapped.

“That woman has poisoned him against me.”

The guards tightened their grip.

A second radio message came through.

“The Range Rover stopped outside the gate.”

Then another voice interrupted.

“Driver just exited.”

I moved toward the security monitor.

Ethan appeared on the screen.

He was wearing the dark blue suit he had planned to wear to my rehearsal dinner.

He walked calmly toward the intercom.

Then he looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel.”

His voice came through the speaker.

“We need to talk before you do something stupid.”

My hands curled into fists.

Victoria suddenly shouted.

“Don’t let him in!”

Everyone turned toward her.

That was the first moment I understood something important.

Victoria was not protecting Ethan.

She was terrified of him.

I walked toward the intercom.

“You signed a petition saying I was mentally unstable.”

Silence followed.

Then Ethan sighed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

“What way?”

Another pause.

“Victoria lost control.”

Victoria screamed from behind me.

“You promised me!”

Ethan’s expression changed on the monitor.

His calmness disappeared.

“Victoria, shut your mouth.”

I stared at the screen.

“What exactly did you promise her?”

Ethan stepped closer to the camera.

“You want answers?”

His voice became colder.

“Then ask Grace what she was really doing for Claire before Claire died.”

The room went silent again.

I slowly turned toward Grace.

Her face had gone pale.

Noah looked up at her.

Grace closed her eyes.

And for the first time since I had known her, I saw fear in the woman who had protected my son from everything.

May you like

“Daniel,” she whispered.

“There is something I should have told you a long time ago.”
