Chapter 9 - Claire’s Last Meeting

The deeper we searched, the more Claire seemed to have left behind.

Not randomly.

Deliberately.

She had created a trail.

The hidden drawer.

The silver key.

The compliance files.

Marcus’s recording.

And now the Father’s Foundation.

Grace remembered one more detail.

“Claire had dinner with someone three days before she died.”

“Who?”

“She wouldn’t tell me.”

“You never asked?”

“I did.”

Grace looked at me.

“She said she was meeting someone who finally understood what Ethan was involved in.”

We checked Claire’s calendar backup.

The entry had been deleted.

But her navigation history still existed in the cloud.

A restaurant address appeared.

I knew the place.

A private dining club near the courthouse.

Police obtained archived reservation records.

Claire had reserved a table for two under a false name.

The other guest had signed in.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore.

I knew Eleanor.

She had been one of my father’s oldest friends.

She had also supervised Noah’s trust documents after Claire’s death.

Rachel contacted her immediately.

Eleanor refused to speak over the phone.

We met at her home that evening.

She opened the door herself.

“You look like Richard.”

I had heard that all my life.

Tonight I hated it.

“Did you meet Claire before she died?”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“Come inside.”

She led us into a study.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

“Take for what?”

“For Claire’s precautions to reach you.”

Grace leaned forward.

“You knew?”

“I knew enough.”

I felt anger rising.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Claire specifically asked me not to.”

“My wife was murdered.”

Eleanor looked down.

“I suspected that possibility.”

I stood.

“You let me believe it was an accident.”

“She was trying to protect you.”

“That excuse is getting old.”

Eleanor’s eyes sharpened.

“Then hear the truth.”

I stopped.

“Your father created Noah’s trust differently from what you were told.”

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“Richard Mercer did not trust Ethan.”

That stunned me.

“He knew Ethan was stealing?”

“He suspected.”

“Then why leave Ethan any authority?”

“He didn’t.”

Eleanor opened an old safe.

She removed a sealed document.

“This is the original trust amendment.”

I read it twice.

Ethan had no legitimate trustee authority.

None.

The version currently on file was different.

Someone had forged my father’s amendment after his death.

Grace whispered.

“Who filed the false version?”

Eleanor looked at me.

“Malcolm Reeves.”

The senator had served as executor.

He had access to every estate document.

Claire had discovered the discrepancy.

That was why she had met Eleanor.

“She planned to confront Malcolm?”

“No.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“She planned to confront Ethan first.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

“Because Claire believed Ethan was being controlled.”

“By Malcolm?”

“Yes.”

Eleanor paused.

“But Claire believed there was one thing Malcolm wanted more than Noah’s trust.”

“What?”

May you like

She looked directly at me.

“Mercer Holdings itself.”
