Chapter 11 - What Happened After the Crash

I could hear the hospital monitor.
Nothing else.
“She survived?”
Ethan nodded weakly.
“The crash wasn’t immediately fatal.”
My knees nearly failed beneath me.
I remembered the police report.
Claire had supposedly died on impact.
“That’s impossible.”
“That report was changed.”
“By Warren?”
“Yes.”
Grace covered her mouth.
“What happened to Claire?”
Ethan stared at me.
“I followed after the crash.”
“Why?”
“I panicked.”
He swallowed.
“I wanted to call an ambulance.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
My fists tightened.
“Why not?”
“Because Malcolm arrived.”
The room became cold.
“How?”
“He had been monitoring everything.”
Ethan began crying.
I had never seen my brother cry as an adult.
“He pulled Claire from the car.”
“She was conscious.”
The world seemed to tilt.
“What did she say?”
Ethan looked at me.
“She asked for Noah.”
I closed my eyes.
I could see her.
Injured.
Terrified.
Thinking about our son.
“What did Malcolm do?”
“He told me to leave.”
“And you left?”
“Yes.”
I stepped backward.
“You left my wife with him?”
“I was afraid.”
My voice shook.
“You keep saying that like fear makes murder smaller.”
Ethan said nothing.
Grace asked the question I could not.
“Was Claire alive when you left?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“I don’t know.”
Police entered soon afterward and formally placed Ethan under arrest from his hospital bed.
But I barely heard them.
One thought consumed me.
Claire had survived.
Someone had made sure she did not reach the hospital alive.
Detectives reopened every part of the death investigation.
Ambulance records.
Dispatch calls.
Road cameras.
Medical examiner files.
A strange inconsistency appeared.
The ambulance arrived twenty-eight minutes after the crash.
Yet the first emergency call had been placed only nine minutes after impact.
Someone had canceled the original ambulance response.
The cancellation came from a police radio.
Detective Warren’s unit.
Another detail emerged.
A private vehicle had been photographed leaving the crash location eighteen minutes after impact.
The license plate belonged to the Father’s Foundation.
Malcolm had been there.
That evening, Grace brought me something Noah had drawn.
It showed Claire standing beside a blue house.
Next to her was a man with a gold ring.
I frowned.
“When did Noah draw this?”
“Tonight.”
“Why?”
“He said he remembers the man.”
My heart stopped.
“From where?”
Grace looked frightened.
“From the day after Claire died.”
“What happened?”
“He came to the estate.”
I tried to remember.
Hundreds of people had come.
Lawyers.
Friends.
Family.
Business associates.
Noah had been three.
Grace continued.
“Noah says the man went into Claire’s bedroom.”
“What did he take?”
“Noah doesn’t know.”
Then Grace showed me the bottom of the drawing.
Noah had drawn Malcolm holding a red box.
I knew that box.

Claire kept her personal journals inside it.
And every journal had disappeared after her death.
