CHAPTER 4 : THE SHADOWS STRIKE BACK

CHAPTER 4 : THE SHADOWS STRIKE BACK

Agent Thomas Vance pulled a sleek tablet from his leather briefcase, tapping the screen to display a complex network map glowing with red and blue warning nodes. He flipped the tablet around so Lily could see the data stream clearly.

"What kind of complication?" Lily asked, her voice dropping an octave as she leaned forward, her eyes scanning the glowing schematic of offshore bank accounts and shell corporations.

"Evelyn and Marcus weren't operating in a vacuum," Agent Vance explained, his expression grave. "The Sterling Foundation was merely the public front for a massive international asset-laundering ring. While Evelyn controlled the high-society social circles and real estate holdings, Marcus was the operational fixer interfacing with higher-level syndicate bosses across the border. Now that Marcus and Evelyn are in custody, their silent partners realize their entire multi-million-dollar operation is exposed."

Lily felt a cold shiver crawl up her spine. "You mean... there are people still out there? People connected to them who want to silence us?"

"Precisely," Vance nodded grimly. "Which is why you and your mother cannot remain here under standard security protocols. Saint Jude Memorial is a public facility. If the syndicate’s remaining operatives realize Eleanor is alive and coherent enough to testify at the upcoming grand jury, they will try to finish what Marcus started. We are transferring both of you to a secure federal safe house within the hour."

Before Lily could process the terrifying weight of the warning, the hospital’s emergency public address system crackled to life with a jarring screech of static.

Code Black. Main electrical grid failure. Auxiliary power engaged.

Simultaneously, every overhead fluorescent light in the hospital flickered violently and plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness. A heartbeat later, the emergency backup generators kicked in, bathing the corridors in an eerie, sickly amber glow.

"Stay right here, do not move an inch," Agent Vance commanded instantly, his hand dropping automatically to the holster at his hip as he drew his service weapon with practiced, silent precision. He backed toward the sliding glass door of the waiting room, scanning the shadowy corridor outside.

Lily’s heart slammed against her ribs. She stood up from the plastic chair, her eyes scanning the room for any makeshift weapon. Outside in the hallway, the distant sound of shouting echoed through the vents, followed by the unmistakable, dull thud of heavy boots sprinting across the linoleum flooring.

Bang!

A sharp, concussive blast echoed from the intensive care wing just three doors down from where Eleanor was resting.

"Vance!" Lily cried out, but the agent was already engaged. Two masked figures dressed in tactical black gear rounded the corner of the hallway, weapons raised. Vance fired twice through the glass partition, shattering it into a million glittering shards as one of the intruders stumbled and crashed to the floor. The second assailant returned fire, sending a torrent of heavy caliber rounds chewing into the drywall inches from Vance's head.

"We’ve been compromised! Breach in sector four!" Vance shouted into his shoulder mic, ducking behind a heavy mahogany desk while laying down suppressive fire. "Lily, get down on the floor! Now!"

Instead of cowering, a fierce surge of adrenaline overrode Lily’s fear. She remembered the layout of this wing from her orientation visits; there was a maintenance service hatch directly behind the vending machines in the corner of the waiting room—a narrow utility chute used for moving laundry and medical waste directly down to the basement loading dock.

Crawling rapidly across the carpet, Lily ignored the deafening gunfire echoing outside. She reached the heavy metal utility door, grabbed the latch, and yanked it open with all her might. It swung outward, revealing a dark, vertical shaft lined with metal rungs leading straight down into the bowels of the building.

"Hey! Girl, stop right there!"

Lily whipped her head around. A third masked operative had slipped into the waiting room through a side service door, leveling a silenced pistol directly at her chest. Time seemed to dilate into agonizing slow motion. She saw the killer's finger tighten on the trigger, the cold metallic gleam of the barrel aimed dead between her eyes.

Without thinking, Lily grabbed a heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted beside the doorway, ripped it from its bracket, and hurled it with every ounce of raw fury she possessed straight at the assailant's face. The heavy canister caught the man square in the jaw with a sickening crunch, sending him crashing backward over a table and sprawling unconscious onto the floor.

"Lily! Grab my hand!" Vance yelled, lunging back into the room after neutralizing the second attacker in the corridor. "We have to move, right now! More of them are swarming the stairwells!"

May you like

Without wasting a single second, Lily didn't take the exit Vance offered; instead, she pointed frantically down the open utility chute. "No! The stairs are blocked! We take the service drop to the basement garage. My mom’s room is right next to the freight elevator shaft!"

Vance assessed the tactical situation in a fraction of a second, nodded sharply, and grabbed Lily by the tactical vest he had tossed to her earlier. Together, they dove headfirst down into the shadows of the subterranean escape route, leaving the burning wreckage of the hospital ward behind them as the war for their survival escalated into its most dangerous phase.
