CHAPTER 9: WEAPONIZED BETRAYAL

CHAPTER 9: WEAPONIZED BETRAYAL

Within forty-eight hours of Julian Mercer’s phone call, the Sterling Foundation found itself under siege—not with weapons, but with the ruthless precision of modern corporate warfare.
By Monday morning, every major national news outlet received an anonymous, highly polished media kit. The package contained fabricated financial statements, altered bank receipts, and spliced audio recordings alleging that Eleanor and Lily were secretly diverting federal recovery funds into personal offshore accounts.
Before the foundation’s legal team could issue a formal denial, a state judge in Richmond—acting on an emergency motion filed by Julian Mercer’s top-tier legal firm—issued a temporary injunction freezing all of the foundation’s operating assets.
Lily walked into the main lobby of the sanctuary building to find total chaos. Bank representatives were turning off credit terminals, delivery trucks carrying food and medical supplies were idling at the gates, and frantic staff members were surrounding Eleanor at the front desk.
"Mrs. Sterling, our vendor accounts have been flagged," the chief accountant said, her face pale. "We can't order insulin for the pediatric wing or pay the security staff for next week."
Eleanor stood behind the counter like an unshakeable pillar. Though her cheeks were pale, her eyes burned with clear, unwavering fire.
"Listen to me, everyone," Eleanor’s voice commanded, echoing through the vaulted hall. "We have faced worse than frozen bank accounts. Nobody leaves. No child goes without medicine. No mother goes without food. I will fund the daily operations out of my personal reserve accounts until this lie is dismantled!"
"They froze your personal accounts too, Eleanor," Thomas Vance said, walking briskly through the glass front doors, accompanied by two federal agents. His expression was tight with outrage. "Mercer executed a coordinated legal strike. He filed a civil racketeering lawsuit against you personally, claiming you stole the estate from Evelyn through fraud."
Lily felt a wave of nausea hit her chest. "They're trying to starve us out. They know if we can't pay the staff or care for the families, the state will step in and shut the foundation down."
"That’s exactly his plan," Vance said. "Mercer wants the public to believe the foundation is a fraud so he can force a court-ordered liquidation. Once the property goes to auction, his shell companies will buy it back for pennies on the dollar—and reclaim that black box."
Lily grabbed her coat from the coat rack. "Then we don't wait for the courts. Vance, can your team decrypt the box?"
"Our cyber division in Washington is working on it, but the encryption rotates every six hours," Vance admitted. "However, I managed to track Mercer’s location. He isn't hiding in the shadows. He’s hosting a high-society charity gala tonight at the Grand Regency Hotel in downtown D.C."

Lily looked at her reflection in the glass doors—no longer the frightened young girl who had been trapped in Evelyn’s web, but a strong, clever woman who knew how to fight back.
"He thinks we're weak because we care about people," Lily said, turning to her mother and Vance. "He thinks our compassion makes us soft. It’s time to show Julian Mercer that love is the strongest weapon we have."
