CHAPTER 6 : THE FINAL SHOWDOWN AT DAWN

CHAPTER 6 : THE FINAL SHOWDOWN AT DAWN

The first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to paint the horizon in bruised shades of purple and gold as Lily and Agent Vance burst through the heavy fire doors onto the rooftop helipad of Saint Jude Memorial. The crisp morning wind whipped wildly across the open platform, carrying the distant, reassuring sound of approaching federal helicopter blades thrumming in the upper atmosphere.

In the center of the helipad, a medical transport team was carefully wheeling Eleanor’s gurney toward the open cargo bay of a waiting black-and-silver chopper bearing federal insignia.

"Mom!" Lily called out, sprinting across the tarmac with Vance right behind her.

Eleanor turned her head weakly on the pillow, a look of profound relief washing over her pale face as she saw her daughter alive and unharmed. "Lily... thank God..."

"We're almost out of this, Mom. The chopper is right here," Lily panted, dropping to her knees beside the gurney.

Suddenly, the rhythmic thrumming of the federal helicopter overhead was abruptly drowned out by a deafening, mechanical roar. From behind the rooftop elevator penthouse, a massive, militarized private chopper bearing no registration numbers rose aggressively into view, its searchlights blindingly bright as they locked directly onto the helipad.

"Get down! Hostile aircraft incoming!" Agent Vance roared, pulling his service weapon and shoving Lily and the medical team behind the heavy steel frame of the landing gear.

The rogue helicopter hovered dangerously close, its downdraft whipping debris across the rooftop like shrapnel. The side door slid open, and a tall, imposing figure stepped out onto the exterior skid, holding a heavy-caliber tactical rifle. It was Viktor Vance (no relation to the agent)—the ruthless international syndicate kingpin who had secretly financed the Sterling family’s empire for over a decade.

"Well, well, well," Viktor’s amplified voice boomed across the rooftop through a tactical loudspeaker, dripping with cold arrogance. "Look at the rats trying to scurry off the sinking ship. Hand over the flash drive and the girl, Agent Vance, and maybe I’ll let you and the old lady bleed out quietly instead of feeding you to the fishes."

Agent Vance didn't flinch. He leaned around the landing gear, took a steady, two-handed tactical stance, and shouted back, "Your empire is finished, Viktor! Every bank account is frozen, every operative you have down here is in cuffs, and federal strike teams are already raiding your primary headquarters across three states!"

Viktor let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed ominously over the rotor blades. "You think a few handcuffs and paper warrants can touch me? I own half the judiciary branch! The only thing that matters right now is that drive—and it dies with you!"

Viktor raised his rifle, sighting down the barrel directly at Agent Vance.

Before he could pull the trigger, Lily stepped out from behind the cover of the landing gear, her expression completely calm, her eyes locked onto Viktor with terrifying clarity. In her hand, she held the encrypted flash drive high above her head, catching the harsh glare of the searchlight.

"You want this?" Lily’s voice cut through the howling wind with absolute authority. "Come and get it."

Viktor sneered, lowering his weapon slightly as greed momentarily blinded his tactical instincts. He gestured for the pilot to bring the chopper closer to the edge of the platform so he could grab the drive himself.

It was the exact opening Agent Vance had been waiting for.

With blinding speed, Vance pulled a specialized EMP signal-flare launcher from his tactical belt, aimed it directly at the rogue chopper’s open turbine intake, and pulled the trigger.

WHOOSH-BANG!

A blinding flare shot straight into the heart of the engine housing. The micro-EMP pulse instantly scrambled the helicopter’s digital flight control system. The heavy aircraft shuddered violently, alarms blaring frantically inside the cockpit as the pilot lost all hydraulic and navigational control.

"Jump! Jump, you fools!" Viktor shrieked in sudden panic, trying to scramble back inside the cabin as the chopper spun out of control, clipping its tail rotor against the rooftop antenna array with a shower of brilliant sparks.

With a deafening crash, the rogue helicopter banked sharply away from the hospital, spiraling downward out of the sky before slamming into an abandoned construction lot three blocks away in a massive, fiery explosion that lit up the morning sky.

Silence fell over the rooftop, save for the whistling wind and the steady, powerful beating of the federal rescue chopper’s blades as it landed smoothly on the concrete pad.

Lily lowered her hand, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the terrifying nightmare finally dissolved into the bright, unyielding light of dawn.
