Elena's hands shook.
Damian closed the laptop.
“I'm sorry.”
“Stop apologizing for her.”
“I let someone this close to you.”
Elena looked at him.
“Then do better with what comes next.”
He nodded.
The next morning, Vanessa and Owen were formally arrested.
The story that had dominated the news for twenty-four hours collapsed within hours.
The forged documents were exposed.
The financial trail was reconstructed.
The stolen money was recovered.
The board publicly cleared Elena.
Reporters waited outside the estate.
Elena refused every interview.
One week later, she entered Damian's study.
She placed a resignation letter on his desk.
He read it.
Then looked up.
“I won't fight you.”
She blinked.
“You won't?”
“I want you here.”
He folded the paper.
“But wanting something isn't the same as having the right to keep it.”
Elena's eyes softened.
“I found an apartment.”
“Good.”
“And a job.”
“Where?”
“A boutique hotel in town.”
Damian smiled.
“They're lucky.”
Elena walked toward the door.
Then paused.
“Mia's birthday cake never got eaten.”
Damian looked up.
“Is that an invitation?”
“Saturday. Two o'clock.”
She smiled.
“Bring no security team.”
He smiled back.
“Can I bring a cake?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Mia says you make bad purchasing decisions.”
