Chapter 2: Three Seconds to Disaster

x

The social discomfort on the polished marble floor intensified in an instant, but Regina was riding the high of her own toxic display of power. She adjusted the lapels of her flawless white suit, turning her back on Maya to face the entrance of the tent.

"Attention, everyone!" Regina announced, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. Vanguard’s brand ambassador, the international icon, Evelyn Vance, has just arrived in our exclusive, million-dollar diamond-encrusted silk gown!"

The double doors of the luxury limousine parked at the edge of the red carpet swung open. Dozens of elite guests lowered their champagne flutes, raising their smartphones to capture the historic fashion moment. The paparazzi’s flashbulbs began to fire rapidly, creating a blinding wall of light.

Evelyn Vance stepped out. But the collective gasp that echoed through the crowd wasn't one of admiration. It was a profound, shared horror.

Regina’s smile froze. Her heart skipped a beat, then plummeted into her stomach.

The million-dollar gown—a masterpiece of delicate, ivory silk gauze—was completely ruined. As Evelyn had stepped out of the vehicle, the ultra-fine fabric had caught on a jagged, protruding metal latch on the vintage limousine door. With a horrific, tearing sound, the entire right side of the gown had been ripped open from the hip down to the hem. Worse, a reservoir of dark, greasy mechanical fluid from the door hinge had splattered across the bodice, staining the immaculate ivory silk with a jagged, black-and-grey oily streak.

It took exactly three seconds for the reality of the disaster to register. The million-dollar showpiece, the cornerstone of Vanguard's multi-million-dollar marketing campaign, looked like a shredded rag.

"Oh my god," a prominent corporate lawyer whispered. "The stock price is going to crater tomorrow."

Evelyn Vance stood frozen on the red carpet, her face pale beneath her makeup, her eyes wide with mounting panic. The paparazzi were in a frenzy, capturing every angle of the catastrophic wardrobe malfunction
Regina panicked. Her mind raced as she felt her empire slipping away. If the media blamed Vanguard for a faulty design or a logistics failure, she would be ruined. Hurriedly, Regina rushed forward, trying to use her own body to block the cameras, barking orders at her terrified assistants. "Get a coat! Get a blanket! Turn off the cameras! Stop filming!"

But it was too late. The damage was public, devastating, and seemingly irreversible. Regina’s hands shook as she grabbed a nearby silk scarf, trying desperately to pin it over the grease stain. But the fabric wouldn't hold, and her frantic, clumsy movements only made the tear look worse. The arrogant executive was unraveling right in front of the world.
