Chapter 3: The Reconstruction

While Regina panicked and hysterically screamed at her staff, trying to cover up her massive oversight, a figure moved through the crowd.

Maya, the quiet cleaning woman who had just been verbally shot at and publicly degraded, stepped forward. She didn't look down at the floor anymore. There was no fear left in her. Instead, she possessed an odd, icy intensity that seemed to command the room.

Ignoring Regina's screeching, Maya walked straight past the security guards. She didn't offer a defensive explanation. She didn't ask for permission. She simply walked over to her rolling mop bucket, which sat near the edge of the marble pillar.

From the utility tray beneath the bucket, Maya retrieved her tools: a pair of heavy-duty industrial shears, a box of heavy silver safety pins used for hanging heavy drapery, and a canister of fast-drying fabric adhesive she used for patching uniforms.

"What do you think you’re doing, you peasant?!" Regina shrieked, her voice cracking as she tried to push Maya away. "Get away from her! Security, throw this girl out!"

"Shut up, Regina," Evelyn Vance snapped suddenly, her voice trembling but sharp. Evelyn looked into Maya’s eyes and saw something Regina completely lacked: absolute, unshakeable artistic certainty. "Let her work. Look at my dress—can it get any worse?"

With the eyes of the high-society world locked onto her, Maya went to work. The flashing cameras captured every movement.

Maya didn't try to hide the ruin; she leaned into it. Taking the industrial shears, she cleanly sliced away the jagged, dangling threads of the torn silk, transforming the accidental rip into a bold, high-slit asymmetrical silhouette that exposed Evelyn's leg in a way that was fiercely empowering.

Next, Maya looked at the black mechanical oil stain. Instead of trying to scrub it, she grabbed a bottle of liquid charcoal pigment from her ruined art supplies on the floor. With precise, artistic strokes, she splattered and blended the pigment across the ivory silk, weaving the mechanical grease into an deliberate, intentional gradient pattern. It looked like an exquisite abstract painting—a commentary on the collision of industrial machinery and haute couture.

Using the heavy silver safety pins, Maya pleating and pinned the remaining fabric across Evelyn’s bodice, creating a structured, architectural armor. Her hands flew with breathtaking speed, mimicking the very designs Regina had torn up just minutes prior.
