Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm
The silver cylinder hummed louder, casting a sharp blue glow across Subject Prime’s wrinkled face. The remaining bikers scrambled backward out the heavy glass door, dragging their broken leader into the gravel parking lot like beaten dogs. They knew what that cylinder meant.
"Lock the doors, kid. Now," Prime repeated, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no argument.
The waitress—whose name tag read Claire—didn't hesitate this time. She vaulted over the laminated counter, her sneakers skidding through spilled coffee, and slammed the heavy brass deadbolt into place. She threw the security bar across the frame just as the first wave of headlights flooded the diner in a blinding, artificial white glare.
Outside, the roar of engines died down to a menacing, synchronized rumble. Thirty bikes, easily. Maybe more. The headlights formed a semi-circle around the diner, trapping it like a stage under theater lights.
"Subject Prime!" a voice boomed over a heavy-duty loudspeaker, synthesized and completely devoid of human warmth. "You are in violation of Core Directive Seven. Power down the stabilizer and step outside. The Commander has authorized terminal force."

Claire backed away from the window, her back hitting the cold glass of the jukebox. "They called you a weapon. What are you? What is that thing?"
Prime looked down at the glowing cylinder in his hand. "It’s a kinetic siphon, Claire. It takes the kinetic energy of anything that hits me—a punch, a bullet, a truck—and stores it. The Syndicate built it to make the ultimate frontline soldier. But they forgot one thing." He looked up, his icy blue eyes reflecting the neon pink of the diner's clock. "A weapon doesn't care who it's aimed at."
