Chapter 1 - THE LAUGH BEHIND THE DOOR

The laugh hit the terrace before the little girl’s tears did.
“Sweetheart, that cake costs more than your mother makes in a year.”
Vanessa Hale smiled as she said it, one hand resting on the four-tier wedding cake as if she owned the sugar flowers, the house, and everybody breathing inside it.
Three-year-old Mia Reyes stood in front of her with one crumpled dollar bill pressed between both palms.
“I just wanted the best one for Mama,” Mia whispered.
Elena Reyes rushed across the terrace and nearly slipped on the polished stone.
“Mia, baby—come here.”
She scooped her daughter up. Mia buried her face in Elena’s neck, shaking with the silent, confused sobs of a child who had offered love and been handed humiliation.
Vanessa gave a tiny shrug. “She has to learn sometime. Money matters.”
Elena’s jaw tightened. “She’s three.”
“And you work in a billionaire’s house. Maybe don’t let her confuse proximity with belonging.”
The words cut deeper than the laugh.
Then a man’s voice came from the open French doors behind them.
“Say that again.”
Every head turned.
Damian Cross stood in the doorway in a dark suit, his phone hanging forgotten at his side. The billionaire owner of the estate had the stillness of a man who had just watched a bridge collapse and was deciding whether to run or let the wreckage burn.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly. “Damian. I was joking.”
“No.” His voice stayed low. “You were enjoying yourself.”
Mia peeked over Elena’s shoulder. “Mr. Cross?”
Damian looked at her red eyes, then at the dollar bill still trapped in her fist.
“What did you want to buy?” he asked.
“A cake for Mama. The biggest one.”
Elena whispered, “You don’t have to—”
“I know.” Damian’s eyes never left Vanessa. “That’s not the point.”
Vanessa laughed again, but this time it sounded nervous. “You’re making this dramatic.”
Damian stepped onto the terrace.
“Cancel tonight’s engagement dinner.”
The florist gasped.
Vanessa went white. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Two hundred guests and the press were due in less than six hours.
Vanessa’s smile vanished. “You will not embarrass me over the housekeeper’s kid.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“That sentence just made this much worse.”
And behind Vanessa, Elena noticed something she had seen only once before: a black leather notebook half-hidden inside Vanessa’s open handbag.
On the exposed page, written beside Damian’s name, was a number with seven zeros.
Elena stopped breathing.

Because next to it was her own name.
And the word: REMOVE.
