Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF A LIE

By four fifteen, news vans crowded the gates and Elena’s face was on television.
She sat on the edge of Mia’s bed in the staff cottage while a reporter outside described her as “a longtime household employee at the center of an alleged financial and personal scandal.”
Mia colored a purple elephant beside her.
“Why is your picture on TV?”
Elena muted the screen.
“Because some grown-ups are saying things that aren’t true.”
“Do they get timeout?”
“I wish.”
Mia thought about that. “I can put them in timeout.”
Elena pulled her close.
For the first time in years, she wanted to quit.
Not because Vanessa had won. Because Mia deserved a life where strangers didn’t shout questions at the gate because her mother cleaned the wrong rich man’s house.
At Cross Industrial headquarters in Manhattan, Damian stood before twelve board members on a wall-sized video screen.
Chairman Robert Kessler went straight to the damage. “We have forged transfers, a missing suspect, and an employee ID on financial approvals.”
“Elena Reyes did not steal from me,” Damian said.
“You cannot prove that yet.”
That word landed like a hammer.
The board imposed temporary joint approval on major decisions. After the call, Rachel suggested distancing himself from Elena.
“No,” Damian said. “Her resigning wouldn’t make the lie true.”
Back at the estate, Marcus found the first real break.
Owen’s burner contained an old photograph of Vanessa at a ski resort with a man named Caleb Ross. A reverse search through private investigative databases identified him as the founder of a medical software company in Colorado.
Damian called.
A man answered on the fourth ring.
“Caleb Ross?”
“Who’s asking?”
“Damian Cross.”
Long silence.
Then Caleb said, “She found you too.”
Damian sat down.
“You know Vanessa Hale?”
“I almost married her.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
Damian looked at Marcus.
Vanessa had told him she had never been engaged.
Caleb’s voice turned bitter.
“Listen carefully. If Owen is involved, don’t trust anything with your signature on it. Don’t trust your staff access logs. And if she’s blaming an employee, get that person somewhere safe.”
Damian glanced toward the cottage where Elena and Mia were staying.
“Why?”
Caleb took a breath.
“Because when I caught her, she framed my accountant.”
“What happened?”
“He lost his job, his reputation, almost his marriage. Took us a year to clear him.”
Damian’s stomach tightened.
Caleb continued.
“And she got away because we never found the master file.”
“What master file?”
“The one that proves she and Owen built the whole thing together.”
Damian stared at the torn black ledger on the table.
Caleb said, “If you have her notebook, don’t lose it. The password is in there somewhere.”

Then Marcus looked down.
The ledger was no longer on the table.
